I've seen this stuff in rattle cans before, vynil dye. I have heard that the rattle can stuff smells like nothing else on earth can, but that it works really well. You can get an airbrush for $20 bucks, but a $50 or so one from a hobby shop or site such as Tower Hobbies etc will probably be a better bet. badgers are good, I don't know about others. You can use a regular shop compressor, just turn it down way low. I have an adaptor for my cheapy testors airbrush, it works really well.
