I will try and make this quick but it is a long story. the timeline is mid 80's before the kockoffs were available.
82 4x4. had a 32/36 conversion from Downey off road. Everything was fine for about a year. After the first year I noticed I had to fiddle with the adjustments every month or so. The carb began leaking down after 2 years. I did a full rebuild and it was fine for about a year. It then began screwing up again. I replaced it after 3 years with another weber, a 38/38 from Northwest off road. Same thing on reliability. I finally bit the bullet and replaced it with 2 Mikuni sidedrafts. After the initial setup, I never had an issue again with over 50k of trouble free driving till I sold it to my brother. He then did about another 50k before selling it. In that time the Mikuni's needed a few minor adjustments but nothing more.
Regarding the K&N' filters: On the aforementioned truck, I ended up having an oil consumption issue at about 50k. When I tore it down I found extreme wear on the cylinders. I had to bore it and replace the pistons. I replaced the filter with a Amsoil oiled foam element on the downdraft and 2 on the sidedrafts and had no more problems to 200k when my brother sold it. I have also had bad experiences with these filters on ATV's and dirtbikes.
