I very recently purchased a near mint condishion 1978 Corona, and although i haven't had time to look into why it is hard to start when its cold, i am most likely going to put my Weber on it for some more ooomph. I will be selling my truck, and this is going to be my daily driver. I am just curious if anybody else has installed/tuned a weber for a 20R and if they could tell me what size jets they used. This thing is going to be driven more or less like a grandma so as to preserve its well maintained condition, but i would still like to have a little bit more mid range power for highway merging, which can be quite hectic on these SC roads clogged with bad drivers. i dont have the current jet sizing in front of me, as i am at work, but i do have them written down at home. any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have a Weber 32/36 DGEV (Kit #K746) on mine right now. I don't know what the jets are, I purchased it as a kit for the 20R engine. It works very well though, although it could start just a tad better. Go to Redline Weber and email them; ask for Bud Pauge.

shonuff, I think I stated which carb (32/36), and as I said on a 20R engine.

it is the 32/36 and it is kit k746. sorry about the lack of info. i bought it for the my 22R in my truck, although it says it works for 20R's as well. the reason i was asking is because it seems to be running rich in my truck, and backfiring when driven improperly. i havent done the necessary tests, but i think my truck may have a burnt valve(s).

Have you adjusted the spark plug gaps and ignition timing to factory specs and adjusted the engine's valve clearances? If not, that's one way to make the engine more peppy.
Sorry shonuff, you might quote the post or use a name when separated by another post. I don't get it sometimes too.

well, i sold my truck yesterday with the weber on it. i really dont have time right now to mess with it along with working full time, going to nite school 4 days a week and working on my other 2 project cars (83 volvo 242 and this Corona)
that being said, i dont think im going to buy a weber for this motor, mainly because i want everything on this car to be original. I have bought a rebuild kit for the carb, but i also looked on ebay and found a guy whos got tons of rebuilt carbs sposedly for up to '73. hes says they are for the 2.0 litre engines. would you guys think that the carb on a '73 corona is the same as the one on a 2.2 litre '78? hes got them for a good price and i have had a hard time finding info regarding the carbs.
also, does anybody know of a company that can rebuild/duplicate old seatbelts? this car needs both front seatbelts badly, they are frayed and faded and altho this is an unsafe car anyway, they would only make it worse when they break mid-collision. i could just slap some matching color replacement belts on there, but once agian, i want to keep this car all original.
Good luck, I rebuilt my carburetor and still couldn't get it to work correctly. Thus, I went to the Weber.

The '73 carb is totally different from the '78 carb so it won't work. Search ebay for "1978 corona carburetor" or "1978 20R carburetor" Rebuilt '78 carbs appear on ebay from time to time.
If it has enough cfm, you can make it work because I've done it. All they didn't was pile on emissions crap incrementally over the years.

Just installed K746 32/36 DGAV Weber Carb on my 1978 Corona, Did all the baseline adjustments to lean best idle, and tweaked a little more, also adjusted the electric choke while it was cold, and it runs like a champ, best money you can spend is get rid of that factory smog carb and put on a Weber. Stay away from EMPI(cheap Chinese Weber knockoff). Picked up substantial power and increased fuel mileage.

Wait a while. With age they become very finicky. Also if you are running a K+N get rid of it and put a decent filter there. I speak from experience.

You say finicky, does that mean requiring constant adustment, air bleeds, jet changes, rebuild after a few years. I was assured that this carb was a true weber and not the cheap finicky knockoff carb like empi or the like. I see that you were a MDT for Toyota so I will take your advice seriously. I was also a toyota tech and know becoming an MDT is not easy.
