'79 Corona tune-up

Recently purchased a '79 Corona. The cat was removed and the O2 sensor left. I have no diagrams to tell me how the O2 sensor affects performance--other than a general idea based on theory. I'm considering installation of a new convertor and O2 sensor. Would like to know if there are other options.

the O2 sensor doesnt do much at all.

just tells the smog equipment to choke down the eng from time to time.

it is supposed to be after the cat, usually there is a fitting on the end of the cat for it.

no real reason to buy a new 02 sensor just use the one that came with the car, if its really gunked up you could clean it, but its no where near as touchy or important as one on a efi car.

its like a dummy light for emissions

It causes a diverter valve to switch air pump air into the exhaust stream to cool the converter depending on the mixture needed. I had to replace the converter because the flanges were rusted badly. If your air pump system is not functional or removed, the converter will likely only work partially correct. Frankly I don't think it's that important, but I was told it was illegal to remove them.

1979 Corona

Hi MicWalk1,

What is the engine of your '79 Corona?

I have a '79 Corona Wagon and it is mounted with a 12RM engine, it's entire system is quite simple and conventional, none of those complicated looking links of rubber hoses and vacuum stuffs..

I'm looking for options and I'm open to suggestions as to how I can further more reduce my emissions, a head shave to increase compression is one of the suggestions.

Good day!
