Hi. Toyota Corona RT100 coupe problems

Hi all

Well let me start with my Car Its a 1974 Toyota Corona RT100 (i think) Coupe. It was made with the 16R and I'm guessing a 4 speed Gearbox, however a previous owner swapped the 16R for a 18R motor and 5 speed ( I think its a T50 Unsure however) anyway once i bought the car I restored her and painted her black. I then bought a rebuilt 18RG motor and got it professional put in as it wasn't a strait swap completely... The gearbox and diff etc were completely stock from the original times when it was made and (for the gearbox) when the 18r was put in her.

For a while it was running great but then it all went wrong....

One day i was driving along in second gear and then all of a sudden the revs got higher however the car did not accelerate. then the revs droped down intill the motor stopped. from this point on when you tryed to turn the Key over the stator motor would Work/Spin but you would here a horrible grinding noise (in Neutral or clutch pressed), i thought ***** the flywheel must be broken or something like that as it was a "grinding sound when you turnt the key" However as you let go of the key so the starter could wind down etc you would then hear a rattling type sound like something hitting something else. so the other day i decided after 8 months of the car sitting in storage in a garage to try and fix this problem. The first thing i did was to check that the motor did not attcually seize that day 8 months ago, I turned the crank around with a spanner clockwise and it turned relatively well (keeping in mind there was a lot of compression as spark plugs were still in) but it turned around. I then took the starter motor off (took some time as its kinda caged in ) and pulled it out of the motor so i could see the teeth, they appeared fine and will all present, then i placed my fingers inside the startor motor hole to feel for the Fly Wheel and i felt it and felt the teeth i tryed to rotate it so i could feel inspect the whole wheel however it only moved around little bit (but enough) due to the compression of the motor once again. so the flywheel also appeared so far to be ok possibly.

so what me and my mates are thinking is that either the Gear Box (probaly a t50) or some area in the clutch has caused this problem, and also quite possibly the diff (however the car can still roll so the diff being the problem to me seems unlikely but im no expert. So we plan to Pull the T50 Gearbox out and inspect the bell houseing and gearbox and clutch area. If this is the problem we were thinking too swap the box with a w50 box and while its apart replacing the clutch also.

My first question is can anyone give me any surgestions or help on what i have talked about above.
2ndly if i was going to replace the gearbox and clutch (hoping this is the problem) i might as well put a decent DIFF in the car as it only has the original diff that was connected to the 16r setup. could someone please give me any help on a diff /driveline setup that would work and be strong and if possible be limited slip.

Kind Regards.
P.S my mate knows more about cars than me i'm a electrician by trade

glad ya came on over here

now this reply is based of this thread and the thread over @ http://www.classic-celica.com/module...wtopic&t=17460

note to class: his flywheel bolts sheared off

i would try the easy outs again, but i would also heat up the crank with a torch first.

i would also just pull the eng. your just a few bolts and hoses from it coming out anyway. you might get lucky and the machine shop can take em out if ya bring em the whole eng.

tranny wise, instead of swapping to a w50, swap to a W58 out of a 82-85 celica, its the same as the W50 cept its made out of aluminum.

for the rear end, check the build plate next to the wiper motor for the "trans axle" code. 2nd line from the bottom. that will tell you what rear end you have. the first letter is what i mean by "T code".

and then cuz you have a 74 you have the same suspension as the hilux from 72-78 so any of those rears will work but it will be 5 lug, but like i said the fronts are super easy to swap to 5 lug. the leaf sprung hiace or a slightly newer corona axl is going to be your best shot for a 4 lug rear axl thats a lil bigger. some older corolla's had leafs in the back as well. any axl newer then 85 might have width issues, so i cant really say not knowing the newer dimensions off hand. you want to find a axl that has the code "Fxxx" (x=#) thats a 7.5 in diff and then you can swap a LSD from a 82-86 supra into the third memeber for a oem LSD.

finnally the louvers on your hood should come off with a couple nuts hidden under some rubber plugs on the under side of the hood. they are made out of aluminum and covered in paint.

love your F'n bumpers by the way

Has anybody taken the clutch apart to see if the clutch disc shattered? Pull the tranny and see whats up, don't guess, inspect it.

hi

Hi guys well i got some good news, I towed the car back around to my house today and put her up on ramps to get under her and tryed to drill the holes into the bolts again then use an easy out bit and it worked! i manged to get all 6 bolts out, I ahve got a picture ill post later. so the next step is to put the gearbox/clutch back in.

So yes what i would like todo is get an LSD diff on her, so i think the best way (if im reading what your saying correctly :-) would be to swap the rear axels to the 5 stud 72-78 Hilux ones and find a LSD diffhead from a 82-86 supra to bolt to it?, ?. then ill just swap the fronts over as well to match to rear studs probley from a 72-78 hiluxs aswell ? haha sorry im new to this old school stuff. (but love it). you were saying about taking out the louvers do you recon this would be good to let in colt air ?

Cheers for your help mate. love your wagon there rare as hell arint they ?.

actually the louvers let hot air out. keeps the eng a lil cooler.

for the 5lug swap take a real good look at your front hubs and balljoints then go find a older hilux at a junk yard and compare. you will understand exatcly what i mean

Hi

Hows it going, about the w58 gearbox i heard that if you can find a W50 cast iron gearbox then its good to keep it because ites very strong??? not too sure tho as you say the W58 is the same gearratios but lighter ally. which would be good. anyway i found some studd on trademe (like ebay here in NZ) i found a toyota supra 1982 which is being wrecked http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Mo...-183956071.htm

And a Hilux/hiace diff http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Mo...-183533621.htm

The Diff head looks promissing but i;m not too sure for sure, the axels on the other hand the seller does not really say what year they are from so its kinda hard i guess ill have to keepp looking haha.

On the other hand one of my mates recons i should just wield up and lock my current diff for the summer. lol

you can get the tranny (W58) from any celica 82-85 or supra of the same bodystyle.

that add says its been swapped to a W55 (truck tranny)

the weight difference is about 20lbs from a W50 to a W58, the gearing is mostly the same, but the shifting is much better. both will take the same amount of abuse without blinking.

as for the rearend, ask that seller to measure the width before you commit. will bolt up but there might be width issues. also seems a bit high of a price without the diff (head).

i really dont advise welding the diff.

chew through tires really fast.

will spin out in corners when not trying to drift.

hops around slow tight corners, killing bushings and maybe breaking stuff.

and always ends in a bad way.

there is a online manual hosted here http://www.autozone.com/shopping/rep...00c1528007c8eb

now there arnt listings for a corona, but again its mostly the same as a celica or pickup, so you can use the torque specs. couldnt find the ones you want in a brief search but there is a chart there somewhere
