I added a bottle of Lucas power steering treatment -- similar to Trans-X? It's a stop-leak and conditioner that made no difference.

Also, I'm not sure what you mean about rotating the belt to change its direction of rotation. Please explain further. If you mean twisting the belt so the outside surface becomes the inside, the belt I'm using is notched. If you're thinking belt noise vs. pump, it's definitely not a belt squeel.

Thanks!

On the "outer" side of the belt [where the brand name, size and date code are printed] draw the arrow facing any direction.
Remove belt and reinstall it so the arrow is facing OPPOsite direction now.
This refered as 180 degree belt rotation.
Long time belt use creates micro-cupping on it contact surfaces causing low frequency vibration.
Trans-x is different stuff then Lucas.

instead of using wire to clean lines, WEEDEATER line works great as well and is much more flexible. Lets us know what the fix is. Perhaps just a worn out, tired steering rack and/or pump? Are you seeing any leaks in the system? We know the year, but how many miles on these parts? Can you still get rebuilt power steering racks for these cars?

I'm reading this to mean that there may be other bits of screen clogging circulation elsewhere in the system -- new pump, lines, steering box. Since the screen is already mangled, I have no idea what it should look like and can't tell if any of it's missing. How and where was it supposed to be attached, anyway?

Guess I get to drain and dismantle the whole freakin' system. Oh joy.

i still think your missing screen was/is the problem.

i bet the pump is the one making the noise, the box really cant make noise. maybe a grinding noise or clunking but not a groan. thats more typical of the pump. try going to a junk yard and getting a different pump. should be the same one on celica's and pickups of the same year group. (78-82ish)

It's not that the steering box is making the noise -- it's obviously coming from around the pump -- but maybe there's resistance or restriction somewhere and the pump is complaining about it.

doubt it.

its more like the pump is used to micron sized chunks.

then it ate a screen.

i say pump failure and snag one from a junkyard, they dont fail ooften.

problem solved, unless some stray bit of screen in the lines or box kills the next pump, or if its bad to start.
