'81 Corona sedan, limited slip from celica or similar?
I'm getting bored with the open differential lately and I'm wondering if anyone knows of other Toyota models, perhaps Celicas, that might've had some type of limited slip design that would fit in my rear axle. Perhaps I will do an entire rear end swap as I am getting some pretty strange bearing noises also. appreciate the help.
Oh also thinking about finding a 5 speed manual to swap in there and replace the 4 speed auto slush box. Are the 5 speed manuals ratios a little better suited for acceleration? I swear I can go up to like 45 mph in first...

Hey, what are you going to do with the 4 spd auto? BTW, I think typically you need to change the differential ratio for a manual, but I've been wrong before. Also, you got so much power your tires can hold the pavement? Is that why you're after a limited slip?

Haha... not exactly too much power... but when I try to get into a drift, when it's been raining, mind you... the inside wheel will regularly break free. I've thought about getting/fabricating a stiffer sway bar to help with body roll. Problem there is that I think the body roll is what helps get the momentum going to start the drift in the first place.
I just don't like dumping all the power through the inside wheel especially because it doesn't allow me to slide properly. All the power...hahahaha I need as much as i can get. I'll post some pics up soon. The 17x7 RS5 rims that I painted bronze look pretty sick
I got a line on a used w58 that seems to be popping out of 5th gear. Seller says it was behind a 22re so the bolt pattern on the bellhousing will be correct for me. However, what flywheel would I use with it and my 22r? Just the same setup as the 85 supra 22re it came out of, i suppose.
Also, in doing the swap the things I would be most worried about would include clutch pedal, shifter location and driveshaft length/swap possibilities.
Does the Supra with the w58 use a hydraulic clutch system or a cable mechanism?
I would need to find a set of manual pedals to complete the swap. I'd also be hoping that the shifter would protrude just about where the auto trans selector is positioned stock.
finaly the driveshaft becomes an issue because it my require something of a different length. I could always just have a custom one fabricated, as I have done this before with my v6 chevette. Again, advice is appreciated.
Still confused about what LSD will work in my corona rear axle
all toyota clutches are hydraulic. (cept some REALLY old ones)
and all W series 2xr trannys have the clutch lever on the pass side.
20 and 22r fly wheels are totally interchangeable, weight may be different. but will still work with any 2xr clutch or tranny.
you can swap out the tail shaft of the W58 as there are a few differnt versions of it. a tape measure and some yarding will do the trick.
the pedal assembly may require some welding, depending on weather or not the upper bracket bolt holes are there.
the driveline should be a direct fit, and if not there are a ton of drivelines to choose from, it is on a celica chassis. so a test fit, then some measuring then off to the yard if your stock one doesnt fit.
im confused about the LSD too, i still dont know what axl you have...
theres a build plate in the eng bay that will have a eng/axl/tranny code on it, a pic would give me all the info i need.
it should look like this
F312 is the axl code.
F = 7.5 in diff
31= 3.91 RnP
2= 2 pinion open diff (note: if final number is even its a open diff, if odd its LSD)
Wow, very informative. Thanks I will get a picture of that plate today, though I don't remember it having all of that info... Probably because I never took the time to read it.
Next problem I run into is having a terribly limited selection of toyotas at my local salvage yards...
Well I just got the shot, looks like the axle is either a T or possibly an F. It was corroded there and i tried to clean it up a little to reveal the true stamping... not very effective. How do you add pictures to this forum?

now you need to go to the corolla section (RWD 82-87) and ask them, i know there is a early and late LSD and you'll need a early one. but i forget the terminology.
but the good news is once you narrow that down there is a ton of aftermarket support for the AE86 so you should be able to puchase a brand new LSD or maybe even a whole 3rd member.
Got a post up in the Corolla forum right now. Thanks for the tips and compliment. I think that I will keep the rear end ratio I have currently, if I go any higher it won't be over 4, maybe 3.9:1. I think that is one of the AE86 options. I don't want to be limiting first gear too terribly much, or my theoretical top speed for that matter.
I'm going to end up asking the same questions on both posts, unfortunately, but why would you say I'd need an early model LSD? Are the dimensions different? Also, does anyone have experience with replacing their own differential and ring and pinion set? Steps for setting gear lash? Hypothetically, if I swapped the ring gear to the new differential, would I need to bother setting gear lash? Wouldn't it (pretty much) stay the same assuming I replace everything the same way I removed it?
ive never done it before. thats the kinda thing where i would buy a 6pack of beer, then head to a local axl shop with my parts n tools, and get somebody there to get drunk and "learn me".
also i believe the difference in early and late is the axl shaft thickness, but dont quote me.
hey mate, i have an 85 corona with a 22re motor. i checked the build plate but where it should have the trans/axle code nothing is stamped there. is there any other way of finding out what type of diff it has? i was looking to put a supra lsd in my diff housing... is this possible?

Well guys, I finally got around to the job of replacing the outer axle bearings today. I'm currently about halfway through, about to run over to work after I check out some corvette wheels for sale and press the old bearings off and the new ones on.
In the process of this job I've decided that I really want to go with a LSD as soon as I can find a worthy LSD. I might just get an oem Toyota LSD from a ZENKI AE86 corolla and rebuild it with new clutches rather than pay an arm and a leg for a Cusco or KAAZ unit, two well known aftermarket brands for the AE86 Corolla. I have researched and found that the ZENKI models which ranged from about 1983-1985 are the type of LSD I can swap right in. I'm still worried about there being differences between my axles and open diff and the LSD hence my continued hesitation. I've found that the AE86 axles are supposed to measure approx. 24mm around the splined area of the axle, mine are just under 24mm. I am going to double check that with someone elses vernier calipers. I don't know about the overall axle length, however I read one place that the Zenki LSDs have 23 splined axle coupling and my axles have 23 splines. All in all, I think the swap would work just fine, but then of course I may have to worry about gear lash...
In any case, I think the addition of a beefy and possibly adjustable rear sway bar coupled with even a slightly worn Toyota oem LSD would probably give me the characteristics I'm looking for to drift even a little bit.
I'll post up some pictures when im finished tonight.
Joe
I feel like I'm talking to a wall here. I was wondering about the 4 sp auto tranny.
