Toyota Corona 1988 Ignition Timing Question

Hey all..

I took my car to a Toyota Dealer to get my Timing Belt replaced, Drove my car back home, all seemed to be okay then I noticed the car was juttering a little, Got home opened the bonnet and noticed that the Distributor was set as far as it would go to the left (counter clockwise) I read up on Google and it was set to Retard Timing, Being a Toyota Dealer I would have imagined that it was set like that for a reason, but car doesn't well drive okay..
Can someone please explain to me the timing, Many Thanks

I would have the timing checked to see if it is within spec. If the distributor was placed in a tooth off, that would explain why the distributor is turned off from the original position.. I have to time my 69 Corona retarded by approx 5-10 degrees retartded for it not to spark knock. But I can do that adjustment with the octane timing knob on the outside of the distributor.. Carl H

Thank you Carl H for that good explanation, Makes sense to me... I had a play with the distributor cap and turned it clockwise and checked the spark plugs, Spark plugs are a nice tan color, not running too rich or running too lean, I must of set the distributor 15 degrees from what toyota dealer set it at... It runs heaps better and smoother, no hesitation from the engine whats so ever
