On my 90 Corolla, getting the bolts out was the easiest part. I figured it out in about 5 minutes. However, I have been at this loose starter for about 2 hours now. I am absolutely convinced one of 3 things needs to be removed in order to get it out-CV axle and/or exhaust, steering pump, or the intake manifold, none of which seem like a fun job to me. Anyone else know of a way, short of cutting a hole in my firewall and getting it through the passenger compartment? (kidding, of course)
On my 87-88 AE82 FX16 with 4AGE, I can get the starter out without taking exhaust manifold off. Undo the wires, undo the two bolts, undo the heatshield on the starter, then you can snake it out. Helps to have small hands & be a bit of a contortionist. The heatshield on starter was key, without taking that off it's very hard to manuever it to snake it out of space. Taking out oil filter & radiator will free up more space to work in, and are both things that are not too hard. The exhaust if you disconnect you should replace gaskets, and there's risk that the fastners might be messed up.
Take off the front tire on the passenger's side and take the splash guard out of the wheel well (or just loosen the corner near the door). Snake the starter out the wheel well. Yes, it is a pain in the neck.
Yeah, actually, that's exactly what I ended up doing yesterday. Took me a while to figure it out, but that did the trick, out the wheelwell. Not too bad of a pain, I've done worse! Thanks!
Hey all, I have an 88 GTS and found that the easiest way to remove the starter is to unbolt the slave cylinder and move it over or upward and back towards the tranny, without bending the hydraulic line to far. Then unbolt the starter and snake it out from the top. No removal of the oil filter, starter shield, rad fan, CV axle or intake manifold. Total time for removal and install is 30 to 45 mins. That includes jacking front end and removing wires and cylinder. Thats if you have a manual tranny.
