hey guys i need some info on the ae87 (1987 corolla fx)
well i just picked a 1987 corolla fx fwd for free from a friend and i wanted to get some info...i couldnt find much on it...is it classified as an ae87 like in the vin or an ae82 or what?...
i want to see what kind of mods i can do...i know there is a usdm corolla fxgt 16 with a 4ag from factory so i know that swap is possible but i can find hardly any info on the car...can someone point me to some websites and tuners of the fx
plus how hard would it be to put in the 20v 4ag silver/black top engines?...if anyone can shed some light on this it would help a lot thanks

i did a carfax preliminary vin check and it told me that it was a:
1987 corolla fx16
1.6l i4 FI
3 dr liftback
i go on another prelim vin check site and it says
1987 corolla fx16
1.6l i4 2BBL
2dr liftback
now i have yet to see the car and i was wondering if the fx16 was a FI model or carbureted...im confused to see if mine is a 4age as i read in other threads or a 4ac as i've read in others
do you have the car yet? easiest way is to open up the hood and either read the engine tag, or just look for a carberator.
north america got 4 basic types of the ae82:
1. 4 dr sedan (4a-c powered)
2. 5 dr liftback (aka seca)(4a-c powered)
3. 2/3 dr hatchback FX (4a-c powered)
4. 2/3 dr hatchback FX-16 (4age powered)
they all use the same engine family and chassis. The 4a-c is a 1.6L SOHC carb-d engine (something like 80-ish hp at the fly). everybody knows enough about the 4age. depending on what model your starting off with, a swap is pretty straight forward (although theyre all pretty straight forward). 4age's, 20valves, 4agze's all bolt in and line up. Biggest thing is wiring, specially if you have the carb'd engine. That means you'll have to make a EFI relay amoung other things (or have someone else do it). you'll also have to change your fuel system over if you have a carb'd engine to start with. the carb'd uses a mechanical fuel pump located off of the valve cover. best way to change it would be to go with atank out of a EFI corolla (ae82 fx-16, or possibly a ae92, which i'm using, i'll post up my experiences with that when i mount mine) and using the in-tank fuel pump with the tank.
it's really pretty straight forward if you take your time, i got a '87 ae82, with a 4a-c that i'm working on fitting with a 20V silvertop.
If it's a FX16, it has a 4AGE in it already. If it's just an FX, it has the carb motor.
I own a FX16 GTS. The GTS has suspension, brake, exterior, and interior upgrades over the FX16... but as you can guess, the FX16 is faster in the straights (less weight).
FX GT is a name not used in the US market, but in most other countries.
I just acquired an 87 FX16 a while back and here are a few specifics:
The AE87G in the VIN is the Vehicle Description Section, which is unique to each manufacturer (digits 4-8). Likely the first 3 digits for your VIN are 1NX, the World Manufacturer Information. Digit 9 is a check digit, you can do the long hand version found on some websites to check it. The 10th and 11th digits are the year and manufacturing location, HZ in your case. The H being 1987 and the Z being New United Motors Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) in Fremont, CA. The last six digits are the unique serial number for your vehicle.
The FX16 is an AE82 as already noted.
Much of the other information you've already located or the guys have provided.
Be prepared that it will be hard to find parts for your car. If you go to a Toyota dealer and they enter your VIN, the parts system won't recognize it and many of the illustrations won't be accurate. And as you explore parts sites on the web or in the stores, e.g. Autozone or NAPA, their systems also won't be accurate. The FX16 was only produced for two years, 1987 and 1988 and a lot of the information didn't get picked up in the Toyota conversion to computers and hence, all systems that work off that universally. It may be different in other countries, but watch out for parts than might seem or claim to be for the FX16, because they often are not.
well im gonna be looking at the car soon...so cross my fingers its a 4AGE...lol anyways what kind of suspension parts are compatable for it...because i wanna basically get full coilovers, swaybars, strut bars....basically anything suspension wise i wanna upgrade...
from what i've read here and there i've seen that ae92 suspension parts are compatable (being the ae82 is the predecessor to the ae92 fwd corolla)...i wanna what exactly i can use and is availible because im looking to invest a good amount into the suspension...
i used to own an ae86 and i know more about that than the fx and i know what suspension parts are compatable for the 86 but im confused on the ae82

as far as suspension parts your looking at, here's what i know:
-ae92/82 front suspensions are interchangeable
-ae92/82 rears aren't, it's a different set up, i'll post a picture of this tomorow. that being said i'm not sure what mods would be required to fit the ae92 rear parts, but from what i can see it would be pretty basic.
-coilovers are pretty tough to come by, i know there's some companies in japan that make some, but i don't know who. you could fit something like ksport ae92 coilovers but that'll take osme tinkering.
-whiteline australia makes basically every suspension component your talking about upgrading, other then that i haven't seen any companies that make that kind of stuff that's easily available.
well i just looked at the car today and its a fx16 with a 4age auto tranny...my friend says he can do a tranny conversion for me for around $400 which includes parts and labor....i was wondering how hard it would be to do the swap to 5spd from auto and how much i would be looking at
you can probably pick up a tranny for pretty cheap. stuff like the shifter, pedals, clutch master cylinder, etc are just pocket change. it's not excessively hard but it's a good weekend job.
btw i love the sudden surge of ae82 owners into this forum.
drove the car around for the first time today...it runs like a champ...freshly rebuilt motor too hehe...now i need to put the rear windshield on and tail lights and bam i can drive it

Rear suspesion is very similar...arms are different length and sway bar attaches differently...but i believe when it comes to springs its same...and spindle/knuckle/ hub assy (whatever you want to call it) is the same

ye i got a ae92 rear subframe with the uprights and arms and stuff, it's all pretty similar. i've yet to compare springs or anything yet. only difference i had is the hubs are different sizes because i originally had ae82 rear drums, and the ae92 disk hubs are slightly different by comparison but that's expected.
