Im having some thought about my two favorite cars. the ae86 and the s13. i want an ae because there not as common as the 240s but then the 4ag-e is underpowered compared to the ka24 that the 240s use. im trying to look for someone that has had both the s13 AND the ae86 that could tell me which one is better for drifting purposes.
I haven't had both, but if you're just starting out, I would go with the s13. It's easier to break loose and a good place to learn how to control the car.
Also, aftermarket support is way better, and if you're just learning, you're gonna break stuff... trust me, its a pain to track down parts for a 20+ year old car.
Neither one is going to be reliable considering how many people now known about the cars potential, I wouldn't recommend a purchase of an AE86 or 240sx as your only car. Good luck trying to find a pristine unabused example.
s13 is easier to break loose and would be a better car to learn in. The 86 requires a lot of momentum to keep it's drifts (making it a lot more difficult for beginners). The 86 is very raw and very fun feeling though if you can handle it.
Neither car will drift well if you don't do a decent amount of work though. The S13 understeers heavily and it's brakes aren't strong enough.
My brother had an 87 ae86 and I've had 3 240s - an 90 hatch, a 95 SE and currently another 91 hatch, all SRd. Stay with the 240, a good condition one can be found a lot easier than a hachi and there are a ton more parts available. Also, as you mentioned, hachis are a ton of fun but way way underpowered.
So 240 + welded diff and go kill cones at a local event.
well if were to get the Ae86 i would do the 1st ever rb26dett swap or if i get the 240 id put an LS2 in. but thanks for the support guys.
As mentioned you won't be the first. You "claim" that you will take on such a hard task but yet lean towards the 240SX due to it being underpowered? It shouldn't matter since your gonna do an engine swap anyways. Its a lighter chassis than the 240 so look at the power to weight ratio. Your not 16 by any chance are you?

Strawberry conversion looks much better. Was going to do that to my car but got totalled.
If he was going to shove a motor like that into the ae86 I don't think breaking it lose would be that big of a prolblem. You have that problem with a stock 86 because it's only got 112 hp lol
- I like both hatches and coupes but from a practical point of view the hatch is better since you can easily fit a set of tires for track events in a stripped and caged one. Can't do that with a coupe nor S14.
- Both the 240sx but specially the ae86 chassis aren't very stiff. They rattle and flex quite a bit. So some significant chassis work is needed when udertaking RB, LS, etc swaps and not to mention fabrication. Cost can get out of hand pretty quick.
- Front end conversions stopped being cool in 2002. They cost money to do right and 240 owners are mostly cheap by nature so cars end up looking like piles.
