I have a '95 Corolla with 4AFE and manual transmission. The starter on that one is located underneath the intake manifold. It is bolted to the engine on the driver-side of the car. Here is a good thread about starter removal and replacing contacts on it.

Hopefully it will help even though it is not your model.

I did it without the manual. 3 bolts if I remember correctly. You do them all from the top. It's actually pretty easy, WAY easier than it looks. The hardest part had to be getting the starter out AFTER I unbolted it. Than again the 4afe intake might yeild you more space than the 4af one.

The contacts were a SINCH too. You'll be scared your forgetting something it's so easy!
I had to mod a 92 starter contact for mine, toyota parts guys were being dumb again and making my order a pain so I said fuck it and just got the 92 part and trimmed it with some snips, then filed the edges down to make them smooth .

It's tricky on the FWD 4AGEs as you need to take the manifold off.. or do it my way, take the rad fan out, and the oil filter out.. and that sucker is easy to reach.

there are 3 bolts and I think all 3 go through the tranny housing.

I don't remember the size... maybe 12 mm? 14mm? Pretty easy to find them... they are the ones that go through the starter.
