i plan on modifying my rear mount so next time i dont have to remove the crossmembers..

May be i will use something like a gm transmission mount {the energy suspension polyurethane one}. and make a bracket so i can just unbolt it from the top. ONE bolt on the top.. two on the sides.. and motor mount out.

I have removed around.. 10 fwd 4a's and installed them.. and i hate having to deal with the rear motor mount. A welder and scrap metal makes miracles.

ae924afdx,

I have thought about doing the same, like maybe taking those two studs out and using a bolt and nut instead, thinking there might be enough room to get the mount out if the studs were not sticking thru the crossmember. just a thought

the bracket is also on the way. That's why i was thinking about going extreme and fabricate a bracket/mount eaSY to unbolt. But yeah.. the bolt instead of the stud is a good idea and should help.

Question I'm confused, or maybe half-asleep - rear mount replacement?

I just came in from starting to remove my rear mount (91 Corolla 4AFE) - I took off the 2 nuts...got the center bolt out...jacked up the transaxle a little...nope (I hadn't loosened any of the other mounts, because I only know that the rear one is cracked - have the others in case I need them).

It looked like there's a bracket around the mount (that the thru-bolt went through), so I was going to see if I could remove that and tilt the mount out...maybe I'm just a dreamer.

Are you saying I have to drop the cross member to get that thang out?

RoxBoxCorolla,

You can try that but most of the time you can't get to the lower bolt on the U-bracket that is mounted on the tranny because the mount is in the way and you can't get the mount out because the steering box will not let you lift the mount out.
If I remember right there are 3 bolts on that U-bracket, two in the center and then one off to the driver's side.

good luck but I am thinking you will have to lower the crossmember to get that mount out.

I think that unless you have a manual steering rack {it gives you more room to work}..and your motor mount is missing the "upper limb" {the metal/rubber thing with no use at all on top of the mount}. you might me able after removing the motor mount bracket off the transmission {two bolts 14mm i believe} remove it without having to deal with the crossmember.. but there is A 99% chance that you have to at loose it. The motor mount studs cause problems when trying to remove it out of the holes..the mounts bumps in to the rack and pinion. Sorry..i cant give you good news. Good luck.

Guess I won't reinvent the rear mount removal process!

I'll defer to your judgement, and drop the cross-member at least a bit. I might replace one or two other mounts while I'm at it, just for the assurance that I'll never have to do this again. I know the rear one's bad, but they gave me all of them in case I needed them. I'll see what I find. I just want to get this done today! I still have a bunch of other stuff to do on it next weekend

Thanks for the info, at least I know what I'm in for now (a lot better than spending hours cursing the thing out because I don't know what I'm doing!!)

I'm goin' in!

Wrenchdad is right! You have to drop the crossmembers to remove the mount. Another alternative is to remove the steering rack but dropping the crossmember is much easier. There are three bolts in the front and five bolts on each side. There is also one extra hanger bolt for the exhaust that needs to be removed.

Yep, I'd say WrenchDad is right all right!

I tried to get it out without fully dropping the crossmembers, and it was close (I actually got the old one out, but couldn't get the new one in...go figure!), but I finally let them down (or hang close to down hee hee). I replaced the front mount too, since I had it, but that's gonna be it!

I couldn't finish and have to run out for a couple of hours, so looks like I'll be under there again tonight to finish it up . I just have to bolt everything back up completely (I have the crossmembers in place with a few bolts now (wish I had another jack handy or someone to help, because I had to hold it up and try to find the holes and try not to cross-thread the bolts all at once. The unfortunate part, is that I had to make myself look presentable, so that meant losing all that grease build-up which used some valuable time better spent on finishing up yeehaaaa.

At least I now know the pain some of you have suffered, and would like to get my hands on the yahoo that didn't think of us when he designed it. Look for me on the side of the road tomorrow, trying to figure out which bolts I forgot to put in
