AE86 AE86 1984 Air Care failed Need help...in Canada

Hey guys I really need help, in order to get insurance for my AE86 I need to pass air care (Canada). Here are my ratings results:

Driving HC - 264 ppm (Max - 255) FAIL
Driving CO - 4.41 % (Max - 1.88) FAIL
Idle HC - 495 ppm (Max - 410) FAIL

Besides those failed everything was passed. FINAL RESULT: FAIL

One thing to keep in mind is that I am running with HIGH Octane over 94 while I was in air care and I did warm up the car fairly hot as well...

I was thinking maybe it could be my catalytic converter...but i'm not sure if that's the problem. It is a welded Cat. connected to the catback and to the exhaust manifold...Now I'm not sure if it's the CO2 sensor not working properly or is it the Cat for sure...I'll be doing the engine compression test soon. Anyone have any ideas?

Is your carb adjusted properly? Those HC's seem a bit high. Do you have any funny odors coming from under the vehicle when your idling "with hot motor", I only ask because several yrs ago I had an odd odor that was coming from the cat. Come to find out the cat wasn't doing anything once I replaced it with a factory used one odor went away. But anyways I would check to make sure the carb is adjusted, don't forget to check the "factory" sealed plug to see if its been drilled out to make for another easy adjustment, I had to drill mine out about 9 yrs ago on my 86 corolla, once I drilled it and adjusted it it brought my reading way down to the passing specs

I don't think I smell anything within the hood when it's heated up. And about the carb, the car is Fuel injected...so I don't think it's misadjusted. =/

If nothing is really wrong with the engine. I would take it to a technician for a diagnosis.
Most likely it just needs a combustion chamber and fuel injector cleaning. It is a fairly common procedure to do these days.
If the fuel spray is not a fine spray you get a lot of unburned fuel at idle and driving.

Probably the EGR valve and the Cat... disconnect the EGR valve and try again, you'll probably still fail but only on one thing if the cat is busted.

Hah, it's been a year!(Actually almost 2 years...) I completely forgot about TN...Anyways the results were BETTER than the average!! I passed with flying colours. The problem was actually the timing... -facepalm- it was firing way too early, so it burnt too rich...Anyways, I retarded the dizzy cap and it runs PERFECT! Just thought I'd update this so others can learn off this...

(P.S. REN69, get your AE86 already!)

Cheers,
David

I can't believe you had to do air care on a 25 year old car. As much as I hate dealing with MPI here in Manitoba, makes me happy not to live in BC or Ontario lol

I heard they were considering bringing it to Manitoba but I know we can't afford it and it'd piss off too many farmers that are running old beater trucks. I've heard the cost of living in BC in general is really high but Vancouver is just ridiculous.
