Unhappy 1987 corolla fx 16 needs love

Hey guys/gals,
new to the site, kinda gave a brief explanation of who I am in the introduction forum. Would like to help my poor Corolla who has seen a lot better days, and put it in solid shape. Cash is kind of scarce, so I envision this will be a long project, but I'd like to start on it asap. Here are some of the things that need working on. Any help would be much appreciated, and pics will follow.

1- body work needs lots of help. rear right side looks like it was constructed out of caulk.
2- paint is peeling, looks like the car is suffering from leprosy.
3- seats and interior need work

now for the harder things.

4- driver's side window bracket broken. (Can't roll windows up or down)
5- engine sometimes wont start. will turn ignition to start, nothing happens. everything inside is lit, (battery is new) will take car to get alternator/starter tested. Will also look at the copper contacts (got this from ldyfsh thread)
6- gas gauge will not work properly (sorta "floats")
7- when braking, car shakes pretty violently, thinking it may be the motor mounts. (If anyone has a diagram of the engine, and can tell me where the mounts are, it would be helpful)
8- brake lights won't work. (replaced the bulbs, still nothing.) cruiser lights still work though, weird. brake light on dash shows red.
9- interior dome light will not work, even though I replaced the bulb.
10- Burns motor oil
11- Leaks transmission oil
12- windshield fluid pump won't work
13- some of the interior/dash needs replacing.
14- A/C wouldn't cool/heat, but it would blow. Now it does neither.

Pretty much sums up the work I have ahead of myself. If anyone has parts for sale that can help me out, manuals, or advise even, I would truly appreciate it. I can access a shop where I can get heavy work done, but I plan to do all the work by myself, as much as possible, in order to cut costs.

1. body work is probably the biggest on your list, its by far teh worst stuff to do, especially since it sounds like you already have alot of rust covered up by bondo.
2. diddo^
3. interior is pretty easy, just find a donor car
4.donor car
5.if teh battery is charged, it has nothing to do with the alternator, its teh start, take it off, inspect the solenoid
6.donor car, you can test it thought, buy a cheap voltmeter, lift off the back seat, unscrew the bracket for the fuel sending unit, get a reading at the very bottom, and top, by moving the float, see how the voltage changes with float position (look for erratic readings, spikes, drops, etc.). its just a basic potentiometer.
7.if you car shakes under braking, probably wont have anything to do with motor mounts. you probably have excessive run out on the rotors (warped). get new ones. does your brake pedal pulse under braking? and you dont need a diagram man, just look for the big metal brackets attaching the engien to the body, theres one on the front, back, left and right
8.check fuses first, then go from there (switch, wiring, etc). get soem socket grease for the bulb sockets to as itll probably need some, which could cause the problem.
9. check fuses/wiring
10.how much mileage is on teh car, could probably use a rebuild. could be rings or valve stem seals.
11.where's it leaking from? probably output seal
12.check fuses, switches, wiring
13.donor car
14. A/C doesnt heat, it only cools, heater heats . check your blower motor. A/c probably needs a recharge

sincet he majority of your problems seem to be electrical, brush up on the basic fundamentals, buy a haynes manual, use the schematics, itll be your best friend. unless you have access to mitchell on demand, or somethign similar (all data)

thanks a lot man, you make it sound pretty easy. Giving me the confidence I need in what seems like such an undertaking. It's got 188k miles on it, and it runs really decent for the age and mileage on it. About the motor mounts, makes sense that it would be the rotors, as it osunds like the bearings are kinda gone as well. Whenever the car rolls at slow speeds, it makes a screeching noise. Gonna start on this project this upcoming weekend. What do you think I should work on first?

Getting it to run safely and properly, work on your brakes first; even if you buy cheap parts at napa or any auto store, its better than no brakes at all. Sort out the brake light problem, could be the wiring that's mixed up.
