ae82: anyone on KYB GR2s? pics?

i'm looking to buy the KYB GR2's and have heard that the front are cartridges...what would the cartridge be, how do u install it, and does anyone have pictures? looking at my front suspension, i seems to be the typical mcpherson strut, dont really understand why they couldnt just sell the strut like any other car with a mcpherson suspension.. someone please enlighten me.

any other strut recommendations for an '87 fx16 gts for ~$300 or under would be greatly appreciated. links would be great.
thanks!

Here's what a cartridge looks like compared to a strut/shock.

The cartridge is something the automakers and not KYB decided to use, it basically makes it cheaper for YOU the owner to replace them rather than replacing a whole strut assembly; Toyota decided to use cartridges on some of their sportier models (MR2, Celica, Corolla GTS, etc..)

The way the cartridge works is simple, take the old one out of the strut assembly and drop the new one in, you may have to use a bit of force as rust and gunk will probably make it difficult to remove it.

yeah i found out how to replace the cartridges. also found they sell the full assembly for the same price so ill just get the assembly. i would imagine the cartridge is probably rusted in the strut assembly. i'd rather not find out the hard way..

Yeah, I figured after posting the pic that it was the wrong one, Well.. Imagine that mcpherson strut without the housing, you're just looking at a shock absorber without the actual mounting points on it.

Either way.. the GTS's come with cartridges so if you're getting the full strut you're basically reverting to the regular model suspension.

here's a bigger pic, you can see it on the back next to the black colored boxes.
