AE86

well if you did any research on it youd know that the AE86 transmission bolts to a 20V. and that there is firewall modding for a 20V to fit in there

AE86

well yeah if you get the distributor relocation kit, or direct ignition, and the waterline kit too. what engine is in the car now?

t50 (stock ae86 5 spd) bolts right up since all 4age (or A series for that matter) blocks use the same housing pattern.

the dizzy cap is on the trans side of the head, so it will not clear the firewall, which is what theyre talking about. theres really two ways to get around it, bang the shit out of the firewall (or cut a hole in it, and weld in a new section around the cap), or get a distributor relocation kit, which will position in with the cam gears. obviously the second one is much nicer, but it isn't cheap.

but yes, you could go with a standalone setup, and eliminate the dizzy completely. usually this is done by using a Ford EDIS4 ignition system controlled by MS.

the water lines exit on the trans side of the head as well, so those obviously must be modified. once again, the nicer option would the the SS kit which has billet housings and such. but alot of people just have theyre own inlets and outlets and pipes welded up and will work just as well.

and yes, its important to know what engine you have in the car (bluetop 4A-GE or 4A-C). basically, with the SR-5/4A-C you'll have to factor in the fact that your converting the car to EFI. you'll need to wire up a fuel pump relay circuit, and convert your actual fuel system over. the 4A-C uses a mechanical, low pressure fuel pump mounted on the head. you'll need to get an electric fuel pump. easiest thing would be to get a GT-S tank, pump, and sending unit and throw it on. you could go with an external/in-line pump and keep your existing tank. however im not sure with the 86's, but they probably don't have any baffling in the SR-5 tanks, which means, you could starve your pump on hard cornering (this could be solved by adding a surge tank).

biggest thing, RESEARCH! take a look at club4ag.com, it's a pretty popular swap.

ok, im right in the middle of mine actually and ill go ahead and give you some pointers...

-the swap costs money, right now ive dropped about 2500 down for it and im still buying so if your gonna be worried about that then take it slow or find a good supply of cheaper parts.
-if you plan on starting with an sr5, i ended up just taking out my whole fuel cell (your right, no bladder) and put in a racing cell. then, ran new hoses and put an inline pump on the system
-make sure that no matter what engine you use (s/t or b/t) that you get the b/t ecu. the sensors are different for the air intake (s/t uses afm and b/t is map'd) this makes it easier to just run open itb's and save yourself the hassle of modifying the intake plenum. Basically, they both have the induction ports on the side facing the firewall so if you go with the s/t your going to have to cut off the ring, close up that hole and then cut a new one and weld it on the other side.
-you can actually make the firewall cut for the dizzy look nice if you take your time with it and do it right. you'll save yourself alot of money and time. same goes for the coolant hoses
-exhaust flange is essentially the same for a GTS 86 4age as it is for the 20v 4age. there are two places where the studs wont line up and you'll need to drill holes but thats easy enough. however, the SR5 86 exhaust path is on the opposite side of the motor (same side as the carb). this means you'll have to get new headers and exhaust as well.

-basically, if you can start with a GTS and work your way up from there. also, take your time and dont rush through it

ya i figured the sr5's wouldn't have the baffles. i went with a fuel cell and inline pump mounted as well on my ae82 when i did the 20V swap from 4a-c. honestly, its pretty cost effective, and parts are cheaper then getting oem replacement parts. and depending on your location, finding a good gt-s tank (thats not rotted out) is tough.
