86 Corolla 4 door exhaust question!

We just bought it and are trying to bring it back. It's in pretty rough shape. We bought it for $400

The exhaust has a piece taken out, I don't know if it's the catalytic converter that is missing or something else.

The muffler is in the back and in the middle towards the front there is a 16 inch odd looking muffler with hose pipe openings attached.

To the far front nearest the engine is where the piece is removed and a flex exhaust pipe about 12 inches long has been put in it's place.

Is it the cat that's gone or something else?

Thanks

The catalytic converter on an ae82 corolla has an air return tube which goes to the intake on the carb. The piece that may be missing may be from the original flex pipe. It was larger than newer styles so they probably put in a new shorter one and a piece of pipe to compensate for the gap
