anyone? just wondering i have an SR5 and i wanna go big (its a long term thing) so i was thinking a 3sgte but instead of RWD why not AWD if im not mistake some tercels and corollas came in AWD and so did the celica i was wondering if any of those would fit with modding and what would be requierd because my ambition is a 400hp to the wheels AE86.. which has been done b4... but i want it AWD i love drifting but im more likely to just drag and hey think about it.. no one would see it coming so any info or help would be appreciated.... oh and if possible i would like to keep the care entirely toyota so if their other combinations that can be considered please tell me im open to suggestions....
the 3sgte is a transverse mounted engine, opposite to whats in your ae86. your going to have to come up with some sort of front knuckle and cv shafts.
also going to get into a custom driveshaft. not to mention all the bracketry and mounting that will arise. a bunch of plumbing headaches. and wiring, which will most likely be the least of your worries.
the corollas and tercels your thinking of that were awd were transerve mounted engines. some of the tercels came in a longitudial/fwd layout but i dont believe that was used in 4wd versions.
as for 400 awhp, the 3sgte can obviously be taken there. not sure how much torque the awd setup on it can hold. but once again, this is a transverse mounted layout.
you could get into toyota truck setups, but placing shit like a big transfer case is going to be a pain.
i havent really looked into this much, but honestly, this isnt going to be easy or cheap.
why not look into other drivetrains from different manufacturers? perhaps a subie EJ setup? the potential is there, and the layout is longitudial.

All Tercels up to 87'(when they started useing "E" series block) were longitudial FWD or 4WD, and the only drivetrain i see semi useable is Tercel 4WD stationwagon(without insane modding, just mediocre insane) which will still be a challenge to do, and i doubt that it can take 400WHP, not to mention all the Bull and money you have to deal with with a custom bellhouseing,
Don't bite off more than you can chew. I'm sure this is possible, but damn. If I were you, I'd keep the AE86 the way it is and use it as your DD til this "little" project is done, and buy a 86-89 celica. Put the awd system in there with a beefed up 3s-gte in it. That would be way easier than converting an AE86 to awd with a transverse mounted engine. I'm sure you could keep the shell of the celica in good condition, and have some "rust" painted on, scuff up some paint (make it look old). It would be a nice lil' sleeper.
thanks for the help i guess ill look into the subie awd systems probably best out of an old impreza L i would think but i never thought of toyota trucks... didnt the tacomas come with smaller 4 cylinders also?
the older ones... had the 22RE in it, and 4runners too, theres alot of suff under there though, your ae86 would have to ride 2' off the ground to clear all the transfer cases....
damn.... so i cant keep it toyota only unless i stay RWD but what about an subie EJ setup? does anyone know if that would fin *(i dont know anything about subies)
anything can fit, whats your budget and skill level is a better question...
money wise it isn't a problem i am not starting this for about year give or take 3 months i just need to plan it out so i can figure what i need to get and what i am going to need help with (i can do pretty much anything except for welding) why have you seen this done before?
corolla all-trac ae92 or celica gt4 all-trac drivetrains might work only problems your going to have is "direct" fitment and bellhousing... check out the dimensions on that
thats the major problem we already said though, those engines are and their drivetrains are transverse mounted.

no, but i have a pretty good indication of what its going to take, and honestly, i can see the allure in undertaking this project, but the fabrication and welding will be the main aspect of the build, and to build this properly expect to see labour hitting well into the 5 digits.
money isnt a prob at all i know its not cuz im not in a rush at all i dont mind taking 10 yrs to do it ive wanted an AWD for about 4 years now the problem is getting around the transverse engines how would u do that? while keeping the AWD
