need help with idle problem on 85 SR5

hi, i have a 85 SR5
just got it a couple of weeks ago... trying to get it run straight for now before i get my swap...
long story short....

i'm having some idle problem when i start up my car...
it idles from 500-800 rpm... and sometimes it will drop as low and 400's and die out...
i tried some carburetor cleaner spray, cleaned it out... and it's still doing the same...

i also sprayed it on my vacume hose to see if there was any leaks, then i sprayed it on the hose that is below the airfilter, next and infront of the carberator, then my rpm's went up while i sprayed it there, so i thought it was that hose, i replaced it, but still doing the same...

has anybody experienced this problem??? any solutions???

i also want to rebuild my carberator, but don't have any instructions, or guide, and never done it before... anybody know any good sites with diagram for it???

thank you ^^

Erratic idling speeds?! I'd try to set the idle mixture a little richer. I had never rebuild a carb before, but tackled it a few months ago due to an extremely poor running engine. If you buy a rebuild kit it should come with a schematic of the carb. Take your time and spread things out on a clean, lit bench. I took mine apart and drew little sketches of everything on the table. Once you have it apart, soak everything in a good carb cleaner overnight (not the cheap spray can stuff - you don't want to do it twice). Putting it back together is the reverse of taking it apart. The kit should also come with instructions on how to adjust the float etc. The float may be a good idea to replace anyway. If it's old it may have soaked up fuel and thus will be heavier and may not regulate the flow of fuel as you hope.

The following page contains more info than you'll probably ever need on carbs:

Gerard was very helpful when I contacted him with questions. He doesn't know much about the old Aisin carbs, but after all they all work in the same way and so could give me some good advice.

Rebuilding the carb isn't such a bad idea but none of the rebuild kits even the ones from toyota do not come with throttle plate bushings. These often leak fuel when you shut the car off not a lot just a little you may tend to smell the odor of fuel. Anyways only way to replace these is to purchase new carb from toyota or maybe aftermarket but I doubt it. Now as far as the idle problem are you sure all the vac lines are good none crossed or leaking. Had similar problems yrs ago I replaced all the vac lines including the carb baseplate gasket and solved problem. Be sure to get vac line from toyota, they use an odd size. If you get the lines aftermarket they will fall off.....to loose of a fit. Good luck hope this helps.

AE86

i have a similar problem. my 87 sr5 idles @ 3k cold then when it heats up it hopping around 1700rpm-2500rpm, i have all my distributor and carb(execpt the 1 runing to the smog) vac lines hooked up (i think), and after its heated up and ran for a minute or so, you turn it off and take off the air filter and see a smoke looking stuff come out of the carb.

p.s. if it helps ne i have a 4ag-lc
