Standard transmission? Clutch change Automatic transmission Transmission repair, Band adjustment. There is a lot of repair information on the web so invest some time in a search on troubleshoot a T40 and you will find a lot, wait a minute, T40 and T50 are Manual trannys.

A40 doesn't have any bands. *So slippage is caused either by a low fluid level or worn out clutch / brake discs / plates (driving with a low fluid level wears them out fast) or (rarely) broken internal O-ring seals (never changing the fluid causes more rapid deterioration)

Sorry about that, "Old timers", I didn't realize that A-40 was the transmission type. i just thought, old school 40 series was a four speed manual transmission. I'll get back in my rocker and eat pudding, jello pudding,

The fluid level needs to be at the top of the COLD range or bottom of the HOT range on the dipstick when the car is idling in neutral and the engine is cold.

If the fluid is dark brown or black the transmission is probably shot or heavily worn and the filter screen probably clogged.

The filter is a metal screen that can be cleaned. It doesn't wear out so it doesn't need to be replaced.

This reminds me of a '93 Plymouth Voyager I was doing most of my learning to drive in. About 6 months ago it developed a transmission leak which got to the point where you could push on the gas on a mild uphill (engine cold) and the car would slip out of gear and rev up before dropping into gear with a thud and shudder. Needless to say as soon as I learned to drive the car in my signature, we gave it to my current high school's Mechanical Technology classes to destroy/learn from. lol

Yes, tranny fluid would probably be a good thing to check and add if needed. Look out for puddles of the stuff under the car if adding some doesn't fix the problem.
