Fuel suction

Hello all, I have 1984 FWD 4 door hatch back. A couple of days ago my car just stopped & after some poking around. I originally thought it was the fuel pump that had went bad. So I replaced the fuel pump & fuel filter but after further inspection the carberator is not getting any fuel. The car wont start I pour a little gas directly into the carberator and the cara starts right up & runs long enough for the gas to burn off. I cant figure out why there is no suction from the gas tank because its the only thing I can think of. Your help is greatly appreciated...

If the pickup screen inside the gas tank is plugged or the fuel line is collapsed, you still may have problem getting fuel to the carb even with a new fuel pump. You can always try connecting a gas can to the inlet side of the fuel pump and see if the crab gets fuel that way. If it does, inspect the fuel line and the tank pickup.

ok i used a rubber hose to a gas can & was able to get suction from the fuel pump & the car ran just fine. A friend of mine suggested blowing compressed air thru the fuel line in the hopes it would clear any blockage. So I blew compressed air thru the fuel line & removed the gas cap & my son could hear bubbling in the gas tank but still no suction from the gas tank. Where is the tank pickup located? Would replacing the gas tank resolve my issue?

I can't remember how the fuel pickup is setup on an '84, but I would suggest removing the pickup for inspection. If you can hear air bubbling in the tank, that would mean the line is good; however, you can have a broken or damage pickup allowing air to be drawn in instead of fuel. Are you positive that there is sufficient fuel in the tank? An inaccurate fuel gauge sending unit will lead you astray, thinking that there is something wrong when in reality you were simply running out of fuel. Just something to think about.
