I'm thinking about buying an 85 corolla (ae86) and just want to hear what people who own them thought about the cars. Are they worth owning? Fun to drive? Under powered? Let me know.
mine puts out
hatch has a p/w ratio of 0.05 hp/lbs , plenty for 4 wheel drifting through a corner when you going fast enough and know the turn ... considering the engine sized properller that sends fuel into a jet engine that sends astronaughts to the moon is 100hp/lb, its a rocket ship of the roads
yea, they definatly dont match up to an s13 or other cars as such when it comes to the whole power thing, but they are a blast to drive (atleast mine is). try to get a gts (with an lsd as brian said) and then when the bug bites you start buying some performance parts for it and watch your baby grow before your eyes.
..o, its always fun to pass a guy with an s13 sideways when your car is underpowered. the look on their face is just unforgetable
I just got one of these a couple months ago (Levin coupe GT). At first I was a little disappointed with the power, but the more I drive it, the more I love it. It rips around corners and getting sideways feels perfectly natural. Mine doesn't even have LSD yet.
lsd can be added later, but expect to spend around $1k USD to buy it and have it dropped in.
Since you're in Vegas, you don't really have to worry too much about rust. You may want to take it to a Toyota dealership for a pre-purchase inspection, that's pretty much it. Remember that all parts of any car can be repaired/replaced, EXCEPT the body. So the condition of the body is the most important.
Before you buy, take a look underneath the car. Specifically check the downward pointing lips of the body that go along the sides of the car. Also the two low hanging parts behind and under the front bumper.
If somebody has been crashing the car over curbs, it should be pretty obvious down there.
Also in Japan it seems like an AE86 with no performance upgrades costs almost the same as one with LSD, suspension, exhaust, etc. If you don't have a lot of cash try to get as much stuff as you can already on the car.
If you do have some cash, it's fun to do all that stuff yourself.

Buy a coupe, they're better/faster/stiffer than hatches.
NO NO, you have it all wrong, the Hatch is better/faster/stiffer than the coupe.
Even though hatch backs have that large piece of rear glass, they are lighter.
They also have less drag, so they are faster and more fuel efficient...
I only realized that years after I bought and spent all that money on my coupe...
I should have just bought a hatch to begin with and I would not have any problems, and I could use the stock motor and open differential and do 4 wheel drifts all day long!!!

Lol... sorry man. I was being a little sarcastic there.
Each car has it's pluses and minuses.
I actually prefer the coupe, I like the look of it better, and from my own research I found it to be a stiffer starting platform compared to the hatch. Infact, it's slightly lighter due to the larger glass pain in the rear of a hatch back.
When it comes down to it you're looking for rust. Since you are in Vegas, you're not going to find much. Then you are looking for an accident free car, straight rails and the like.
Engine wise, well it's a stock bluetop, they are not hard to fix, or even replace.
In all honesty, the one thing you want to do it find a REALLY clean frame. The rest of the drive train you can sort out later, rebuild, repair, replace. But a clean frame? Well you'll spend a lot of money on Body work if you end up with a bad one.
So focus on the frame/shell/body of the car and then go from there.
lol well in all honesty after owning my ae92 for over 5 years & just recently buying an eight six... after about 2 min of beating on the eight six (in shitty running condition) i can allready tell its going to be way more fun then my ae92 (i think RWD might have somethign to do with it lol ) if your after power then its the wrong car ! yes you can modify the hell outta them if you want but mainly... if your looking for a light, efficient RWD car to have fun in, then yea the eight six is it !! find one an go drive it !
