input shaft bearing

i have an ae86 gts. when i drive the car there is a loudish mechanical noise when i rev past 4000. heres a vid of it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hb4BU...e=channel_page

the noise only happens over 4000 rpm. some people on other forums said it might be the input shaft bearing or the idler bearing.
i havent brought it to a mechanic yet but ive called a few asking how much it would be to replace the bearings i mentioned above. some said i would have to rebuild the tranny.
is this correct (that i would have to rebuild the trans)?
any feedback would be appreciated.

input shaft bearing replacement requires transmission disassembly.
transmission disassembly requires transmission removal.

once it's apart, it's a good idea to replace the 2nd and 3rd gear synchros, at a minimum.
and toss in a new clutch disc while you're there.
maybe a rear main seal too.

thanks for the reply.

i noticed when in neutral and i rev past 4000, it still makes the sound.
so would that mean its not a trans problem?

Clutch engaged or disengaged? If the clutch is engaged, then the input shaft is spinning (not-so-happily, in your case). If the clutch is disengaged (pedal pressed to the floor), it would likely eliminate trans input shaft.
