Grinding noise turning when cold

My 87 DLX Corolla with manual transmission and no power assisted steering has been (last few months) making a loud grinding noise lower front (mainly left front) when turning (L or R) after starting in cold weather. After driving for a few minutes, the noise is much abated or gone. If starting in mid-day on a warm day, noise is barely noticeable, more of a slight whooshing than a loud grinding.

Any ideas?

Wheel bearings? who knows, it's one of those things that are better diagnosed by someone being present to hear it.

I would say cv shafts but its rear drive my ae82 made a grinding noise when they were going out
