I am starting a AE86 coupe rebuild project and am throwing around the idea of a RB26DETT for the motor. I am a previous and future DSM owner so fabrication is no stranger to me. The only problem I think I am going to have is the AWD tranny. Any suggestions, write-ups, and experience are welcomed.

if i already have a Nissan 240SX. is it possible to swap the engine out and put in a RB26DETT engine in with out switching the tranny. if not is it posible to get a Skyline tranny that is only RWD. cause all the skyline trannies i saw were 4WD

there is no way a the stock 240sx tranny will hold up or even bolt to the RB26...
what you need is a RB25DET transmission out of a R33 GT-S...it will bolt right up to the RB26 and is a RWD transmission and it will withstand the power produced by the GTR motor...
I've talked to my buddes about engine swaps similar to this. You're going to get alot of shit for it. But I say go for it. There isn't a rule written anywhere stating that a cars engine has to be of the same company.
i'd be worried about the room in the engine bay and the work to fit the transmission and the location of the shifter afterwords. From what I can tell, and this is just from eye-balling pics online and stuff, but the RB is close to the length of a JZ series motor, which a guy had some trouble (but was successful at) installing in an AE86 Corolla. But I don't know where the shifter ended up in the car, if it was a comfortable position or not.
And along with the engine and trans, you need a custom driveshaft to your new rear end of choice. There is no way in hell a stock corolla rear will hold more than 200HP/200TQ, so get a supra rear from a celica supra, a narrowed ford 9" or even an 8.8", or do more custom fab and make your favorite IRS fit under a corolla (I hear that a s13 240SX subframe follows the corolla's underbody in a really remarkable way that it *could* be made to fit with just some mounting points welded to the unibody)
These are my ideas.
But so you know, nissan SR20DE/T, KA24DE, and the Honda F20/22 from the S2000 have all been successfully swapped into an AE86 on a somewhat regular basis, so those builds may be a good reference/starting point for you.
Hrm... u know the rb26dett is very expensive motor, ive seen it cost around 4k for just the motor alone at some shops. i recomend a rb20det and a skyline gts tranny(RWD one) but if ur guna do that id rather go with a 7mgte at lease then u can barred that and make ur corolla smog legal with a supra motor, since a 7mgte sway would only cost u around 2k at most. but if ur feeling like a superstar go 2jz, but ur looking at around 2.5k for tt swap and 1.2k for na swap. but if u still hung up on hte rb26dett swap use the skyline gts trans from a rb25det, that way ull have it rwd.
but then again ill give u props. everyone that is a hater on swaps can all suck it, cuz since its ur car not theirs first of all, and second, its unique. u know smokey nagata, he never does regular swap either, but then again he is hella fast and banned from lots of different countries.
oh yeah if ur guna put a high power motor that is heavy into the corolla, i recomend that u first of formost look up is on brakes. ive seen lots of 1jztt wrecking on tracks due to weak brakes. i recomend maybe the rx7's or 300zx. and if ur feeling like a superstar a mkIV setup. there are lots of shops out there making bracets for brakes.

lol, what a tard, never go with the rb20, you can get a 25det with rwd trans for $2100 at your door. not to mention the parts availability for the 20 sucks and you are very limited due to small displacement. the 25 is not bad. but the sr20 is a better idea than the rb20 hands down. if you want a rb, get a 25det bolted in and when you get the money get a rb30 block, standalone, and a bigger turbo, BOOM 800+hp street car =]

Having dealt with the RB26 personally I can attest to its power and potential however it is expensive to purchase and even more expensive to run lots of power through it reliably. A close friend of mine just put $10,000 worth of parts into one including machine work and labour which we had another friend do on the side. Should he choose to tune it to the limit it is quite capable of at least 700 WHP.
As far as the RB20 and RB25 go. You really can't go wrong with either one. Though despite what f22 says parts availablity for the RB20 is actually far more extensive than for the RB25 or RB26. As well for reliablity you really can't go wrong, the RB20 will happily bounce off the pin all day long and come back looking for more. Plus if you do manage to blow one up, they're everywhere if you know where to look and they're relatively cheap compared to the RB26. You will of course need a transmission from Skyline GTS-t in order go RWD.
Essentially you're looking at a difference of thousands of dollars between an RB26 compared to an RB20 or RB25.
However I believe you should stick to a Toyota motor. If you're willing to go through the trouble of putting in a Nissan engine might as will go with the ones that made the car instead. Honestly I think a 20V swap would be the way to go. But thats just my opinion. If you do swap in an RB engine, keep us posted cause I think that would pretty cool to see and it's be interesting to see.
