I'm not saying don't do it, but in my experience, it's much easier to buy one than to build one.

Simply swapping a head onto the car won't really make enough difference to make it worthwhile. Although the 4AG engines are old now, it's better to drop in a complete good-runner than it is to try to cobble something together. The exception to this is if you
really know what you're doing. In which case you would not have asked this question, and would already know what's involved.
Not that GTS cars are
all that either, they are just easier to build up from. They have several advantages:
disc brake rear
6.7" diff which has better selection for LSDs
fuel injected
8k tach
slightly more hp
All these things can be swapped into an SR5, it's just time and money.
We've done GTSR5 conversions before, but usually only used the SR5 shell after sending it to a bodyshop for stitch welding, full bodywork and paint. We strip the shell, tow it there, wait 6 months and tow it back, then swap all the parts over from the rusty/crashed GTS for a full restoration. Easiest way to spend $5-10k that you can think of, as you would be rebuilding and replacing all the wear items that you can afford
while it's apart.
In the end, if your goal is a GTS swap, it's a LOT more time and money than anything else. Your car is down for quite a few months, depending on your abilities and your workshop and tool set.
