confused!

Hey guys, Ive got a question for you! My 86 4-ac corolla has had everything replaced from the carb, tune up, fuel pump, etc. reently we set the timing by nupluggin the vacuum advance and setting it right on the money, and it ran good but when i mash down on it the valves rattle like crazy. When its cold they dont make much noise.I retarded the timing and its better but sluggish on the take off! what gives, im stumped! thx for the help.

You may be confusing the rattling noise with ping?

Ping can be caused by a few things, incorrect timing or mixture are the most popular culprits.
