No high beams

So with some help from a friend and by recommendation of an auto shop I should replace the dimmer switch and headlight relay. My question is up until what year were the same switch and relay used? Again I have a 76 corolla wagon dlx with a 2-TC engine.

Could I directly bolt on a headlight/wiper switch assembly like the one shown here from a later generation corolla?: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/88-89...s#ht_768wt_941

ORIGINALTHREAD:
I have a 2TC 76 corolla dlx wagon. When I flip the dimmer switch to high-beams the low beams go out like they should, the highs don't come on but the high-beam dash indicator comes on. I disconnected the harness at the steering column to isolate it and I checked continuity between the ground, low and high beams, and everything seemed to check out. When I connect the harness again I get continuity from ground to high and low, regardless of the switch position. So I guess I can assume the problem is a crossed wire somewhere from the harness connection and the headlights.

Could this problem be caused by a bad relay? How can I test the relay?

What else could I test or isolate to find the problem?
