Safety Belt Catch Release Button

The safety belt catch release button (the red plastic square one) on my
1981 Corolla KE70 has started to disintegate after years in the hot sun.

One can see a hole about 1 cm long along its length. I shoved some
sponges inside, then plastered the top with several layers of duct tape,
and it looks usable for quite a while yet.

One can't really find a replacement for this part of the assembly in the spare
parts shops or wrecker yards here anymore.

Even if this button is gone, can one still poke a screwdriver or something
onto the metal base to release the catch ?
