ae86 welding rear diff question...

I was wondering if you need to take the diff out in order to weld an open diff, or whether it can be done in the car.

Thanks

Chris

you will not be able to turn the car without destroying either the diff, axles, or tires. it will at that point only be able to go in a straight line, not be street driven, and be a trailer queen.

Removal is the proper way. Remove rims, brakes, axles, propshaft, pinion snubber (bumpstop) then pull the diff out.

Degrease, and weld away. Don't get spatter on the ring gear or bearings.

Clean off the old gasket thoroughly.

Put it back with a small (2mm) bead of silicone sealant or Toyota FIPG.

If you're building a demolition derby car, you can stick weld thru the filler hole if you're crafty. But they tend to stop working after a couple hours

I wouldn't even advise doing a welded diff.

Pinion shaft removed, solid sleeve machined to size, entire diff heated to allow proper penetration, then welded:

At this point, it's going to be the axles or tires that break, haha.

Neither would I, but that wasn't the question.

We install a lot of limited slip diffs here, but the occasional drift car has a mexican posi.

Agreed. That diff isn't even in a car right now, haha. It was welded simply because it was lying around doing nothing. It is now setup in a 3rd member, sitting there waiting for some testing .

I've driven with a welded diff around town, it's not nearly as bad as most people say. Still I would never do it in my own car, ever.

I remember when my cousin had his '80 Malibu with the 455 in it. After we welded up the diff the easiest way to go around a corner was to give 'er gas.
