Another noob question.
I just saw a 1987 FX16 GT-S Corolla for sale. I thought that the FX16 and GT-S were 2 different corollas.Could someone please explain the differences between the FX16 and GT-S?
^^Micro you are confused because he isn't talking about the AE86 GTS...
The FX16 is a FWD Corolla hatch with a 4a-f or 4a-fe or 4a-c or something along those lines. (~105-115HP). It has 13inch wheels and drum brakes in the back.
The FX-16 GTS is much more rare. It is the same chassis with a better suspension, 14inch wheels, 4W disc brakes, and a 4a-ge (~120-130P).
The FX-16 GTS would be a fun little light go-kart of a car
the fwd corolla GTS (AE92, 1989-91 trueno) is actually the continuation of the rwd corolla GTS (AE86, 1985-87 trueno), a sporty corolla if you will. totally different from a corolla sedan for driving your family around.
i would say the FX16 (AE82, 1987-88 FX) resembles a honda "CRX"... they were both a "civic"/"corolla", both fwd, both hatchbacks, and both stopped production around the late 80's early 90's here in the united states... the FX never came back like the crx did as a "del sol" but it did continue in europe and austrailia, and more than likely in asia. this one resembles the 84-91 corolla sedan a whole lot more. the base model FX is practically the hatchback version of the sedan. built in NUMMI in california.
Ok. I'm not trying to be a pain, but i have to clarify this for the records. the AE86 in the US was marketed as the "Corolla Sport" whereas the front wheel drive (ae82) were marketed as the "Corolla FX" and the sedans were marketed as merely the "Corolla" The three separate lines each had their own trims. Mind you i am speaking merely for the US market.
Corolla Sport aka AE86 -(RWD)These came in two different body styles the coupe and the liftback. Both trim levels were available for both the coupe and the hatchback with the exception of the 1984 year in which only SR5's were produced.
Two different trim levels were available; the GT-S and the SR5.
GT-S - the sportier model with the 4AGE, better suspension, ect, ect, it was NOT available with an automatic tranny.
SR5 - the economical version; 4AC motor, different rear gearing, ect, ect.
Corolla FX - I know of 3 specific trim levels, and that it was only produced for the 1987 model. 2 door hatchback, Is FWD
FX - baseline FX corolla, 4AC, crappy suspension, rear drums, no front swaybar, a few other lacking items.
FX-16 - your next step up FX comes with 4AGE motor, optional rear disc brakes, swaybars front and rear
FX-16 GT-S - your top of the line FX corolla, 4AGE motor, best suspension, biggest swaybars, rear discs, ect ect.
Corolla sedans - Your standard run of the mill FWD sedan. All models came with 4AC motor available in two different body styles, 4door or 4 door liftback. Each model was available for all trim levels
DX - basic trim model, no "DX" badge present on the car
CE- (not sure of any differentiating specifics)
LE - Top of the line
Please note i do not know as much in detail regarding trim on the sedans if you have any info please share.
If i have given any info here that is not correct please tell me, I always try to be as accurate as possible.
i say go with a blacktop 20V with the stock 6-spd transmission. since ur already FWD, might as well get the hottest 4AGE and the hard-to-get 6spd tranny to make all those civics pout and whine as they eat ur dust!
