85 Corolla bogging down

So, I have an 85 Corolla 4cylinder with around 100k on it. The car was mine, and I sold it to my brother. It sat for close to 2 years simply because I had other vehicles to drive and it needed some minor work.

The problem is that it seems to bog down when you try to accelerate sometimes, and it will die if you have to sit for a minute or two like in a drive thru line. IF it dies like that it starts up badly and just runs like crap for the rest of the day. It can be hard to start once it dies, and pumping the gas just makes it flood.

So, in my estimation, does that mean that it is likely getting plenty of gas but maybe not enough spark? I was thinking that basic tune up stuff would probably be in order anyway since it had sat for a while, but he's been driving it for a month or two now and this is the only real issue.

Any ideas?

I'd say check out your plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor and go from there. Also is it carbed or fuel injected?

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking, just basic tune up stuff. I want to say that it is carbureted, but it might be a throttle body injected model. I'll say carb though. The car is at my brother's house a half hour away, and he doesn't know much about cars at all, and has little money, so I'm trying to help.

The car has low miles, new tires, and has been reliable. The reason it sat ended up being brake issues after the tires were slashed in my neighborhood and the sitting wasn't good for the brake system. I sold it to my brother for cheap, he's been driving it, and now it started this stuff.

I'm going to go over there as soon as I can and help him replace the plugs. We'll probably do wires too, and the cap/rotor.

Oh, and I should probably add that my brother says the car runs like it gets tired. He says that it might be fine at first, but the longer you drive it the worse it all gets, the more it wants to bog down, and then it dies if you stop too long.

I don't really know why it would get "tired".

sounds like ane electrical problem. something is getting to hot and shutting down. check to see if it has an ignition module. not to mix brands and all but chevy had a big problem with there modules getting hot and doing the same thing. both of the engines have modules. the carbed runs 100 and the efi runs 280. i hope im wrong since your on a budget.

Sounds like the old gas has clogged things up. Try putting on a new fuel filter and fill with fresh gas with fuel system cleaner added. Can't hurt.
