AE86 Do you know your AE86 Engine Bay Dimensions?

Hey Guys! So here's the thing:

I've been researching quite a bit. I've seen a 1UZ-FE swap done to an AE86 numerous times. And I have a Toyota Celica ST162 I want to do the swap with.

I know the dimensions of this legendary 1UZ V8 engine. But given the remarkably similar body style design and size between the mid 1980's AE86 and Gen 4 Toyota Celica I want to know exactly the engine bay dimensions of the AE86.

If the AE86 engine compartment size is of reasonable similarity with mine, then this will be an easier task for, aside from fitting the firewall and crossmembers etc. Those are a must anyways.
But I've heard others saying that there was minor cutting and modifying.

So I'm really thinking about going with this swap and nothing else. Gonna be a money eater, but this is what I want.

Edit: By the way, I'm converting this car to RWD.

My engine bay.

Any contributing replies appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: Oh, in regards to comparing the engine bay size visually, keep in mind the angle I took the first picture.

What measurements specifically do you need? I don't mind measure some key point areas.

Some had done the Toyota V8 Lexus engine. bigdaddywalts is the dude I remember. I think he is here. I know he is a member on Club4AG for sure since I know Im a fan of his work.

You have to remember that the balance of the Front load is going to be way heavier than the rear end. Even with a Beefer Celica supra or Ford Solid axle is going to be something to think about.

PM me since Im not on TN very much. Yes I do have an AE86 GT-S.

So, you've got an idea about an engine you wanna swap in. Fine, I'll leave you to your choice of motor since you admit it will take some fabrication to make work. But here is an important question to consider, how are you gonna harness that motor to move your car? I.E. driveline? If you want v8 power but in a FWD layout, look at early/mid 90's cadillacs. I saw a magazine article that had one swapped into a 88 Golf that would take some serious looking to see that the front end had to be lengthened and widened to make it fit, it was that clean.

If you're going rwd, you need a trans, driveline, and rear end. I dunno if the 162 has the same driveshaft tunnel as ST165 alltracs, and if it doesnt, then you'll probably need to fab that in. And find a rear that can handle the power (again maybe a ST165 or newer rear) and mount that. And then the driveshaft will be custom guaranteed. The transmission will need to fit, so you will need to create a transmission tunnel to fit that into the car, which is more cutting & welding that just to get the engine to fit in the bay.

From an eye-ball perspective, I'd expect the 1UZ to fit with more room in your ST162 just be cause the Celica is a larger car than the AE86, but I've never looked closely at a 1UZ swapped 86 or a ST162 to be certain.

Hope this gives you some things to ponder, and I wish you luck whatever direction you go withy our car.

To let you know The ST162 has the 3S engine family. I know I have even seen many
3S-GTE swaps and the Beams engine in RWD AE86 layout. Not as hard as it seems since there is many Transmission swaps for the Supra transmission with customize bell housing. Some can be bought. I forgot what shops does the kit or make them.

As for the Wiring, DR.Tweak at Club4AG specialized Hybrid engine swaps for Toyotas. Search around.

I Gotten your PM. Its been raining alot here and I will be sure to get those measurements you requested. To let you know Inline 4 engines are similar in size. But weight little different and placement height. not much of issue. its just displacement of position really.

Should check Club4AG for help. Im there all the time vs here. same SN.

Thank you. Yes, I'm going RWD, no way am I going FWD. I'm actually looking at both the AE86 Rear driveline and Supra's, preferably old Supras like MKIIIs. I will be doing this 3 to 4 years from now, so there is plenty of researching time and planning. If time/money permits and if this site is still up in that time, I will be posting my progress here.

Go with a supra rear driveline or try sourcing one from an all trac. The AE86 rear end won't be able to cope with the amount of torque the 1UZ is capable of producing. Another option would be a narrowed ford 9" or 8.8" rear end.

Other things to consider are brakes, suspension, and bolt pattern for the wheels. iirc, your st162 is a 5x100, the 86 is 4x114, the Celica supra rear is 4x114, the MkIII supra rear is 5x114, and the Ford rear ends can be had in I believe 4 and 5x114. Also, you'll probably want rear discs (especially since drums suck), so make sure you get those. You might want to consider swapping front hubs to something that will match whatever rear end you end up using.

Another thing to consider, if you have the time and money, is to try to pick up any parts you can now, and start saving up and storing all the things you think you'll need. 5 or years from now, parts you might need or want may not be as common as they were before, so now is a good time to start hoarding things (if space permits).

If you want to upgrade your rear end, one from an All-Trac is not a wise choice, as it is the same size as the AE86 rear end.

I'm most likely going for the MKIII Supra rear end. Does anyone know if the MK5 Supra rear end may work with the 4th Gen Celica? I know The MK5 and 6th Gen Celicas are very similar in body size, not so sure about rear ends.
