FWD to RWD?

Ok, I'm putting my flame suit on for this one...

I was brainstorming about using a AE86 front and rear subframes and drivetrain to swap my FWD AE82 sedan to RWD.

I realize of all the cutting and welding involved, but I wonder just how well the subframes will match up to the FWD body. I know there are major differences between the FWD and RWD body's, but I also know how Toyota liked to keep as many things the same between there cars. Because of this I'm hoping I can use the FWD strut perches and keep the welding to a minimum.

Thoughts? Criticism's?

You would be better off just buying a RWD AE86 IMO.

I don't know of anyone who has successfully completed a conversion on any FWD Corolla so you're pretty much on your own as far as fabrication and knowledge goes.

I took a quick look around and didn't see anything in that zone. Anything can be converted RWD if you're up for the task, but it's a question of how much work you want to do. I've seen everything from RWD Protegés, to old Civics and CR-Xs.

It's doable, but should you do it?

It will be Cost effective, safer, and less painful in the membrane to just get the Correct Chassis the first time.

The Corollas during those times had similar frames. But not something you can just put together like a puzzle. Its not like Hondas during those times. Hondas were FWD layout. Compared to RWD Chassis vs FWD Chassis are way different for Corollas. Specially since the engine layout is different as well. One with drive shaft tunnel for RWD middle frame section.

But hey, Fabrication is what makes anything possible.

I can't recall if the ae82 corollas had an all-trac model, but the ae92s were, so it would be easier to make a ae92 sedan or wagon full-time rwd. from what I saw (I think on club4ag) the all-trac rear end looked very similar to that from an SR5 corolla.

As for the front end, you shouldn't need to use the front subframe from an AE86 to convert your AE82 to rwd, and since it's a live axle rear you want to put it, there really isn't a rear subframe, just mounting points on the body for the lateral links, pan hard rod, sway bar, and rear shocks.

Short story, just at an AE86 if you really want rwd, or start with an all-trac. If you just have to have a dope 82, look into swapping a gze or 20V.

You would need to re-hire the 1986 team of engineers who designed your car in the first place.
