oh i forgot to mention, my wife gave me permission to get an ft-86 next year but toyota is going back and forth on the design and wether or not it will be a scion and blah blah blah, i figured this would be a much better and funner choice.
I don't know if an LSX motor will fit in an AE86, but even if it does without modifications (and I'm not saying it will), You'll need to do some custom fabrication to fit a transmission in there. And the T56 (the 6-speeds people love to use) is more expensive than the LSX.
You'll need a stock Toyota T50 transmission and driveshaft to run a 20V, along with wiring. That swap has been done to death, so you should find plenty of info about it.
I'm sure mount kits exist for a 13B swap, I just haven't seen them sold. Expect some fabrication anyway.
Both the KA24(D)E and the SR20DET require modifying the hole the shifter comes through b/c those transmissions are longer than the T-50s. Mount kits are sold for the SR and you should be able to adapt that to a KA if you try.
Both the LSX, 13B, KA/SR swap will require a different, stronger rear end and custom driveshaft. A GTS rear can't handle the torque of those other motors (well, maybe a N/A 13B, but definitely not a turbo'd rotary). An SR5 rear can have trouble with just a stock 20V.
You might also consider an F20/22 swap from a Honda S2000.
FWIW, I've heard that the FT-86 will be badged and sold as the Scion FTS in the states starting sometime in 2012.
yeah i knew that and that was dashing my dreams to bits. i knew i was going to have to do work on the rear end for the motor swap, im just not sure exactly how far i wanna take this project.
Make some decisions, come up with a plan, come up with a budget. Jumping headfirst into a Corolla without doing some research leads to hacked up cars, unfinished projects, wasted money, and missing out on a chassis and culture that can teach a lot.
Patience and research are key to a successful Corolla build. Don't expect things to come quick or cheap during your first build (unless you can do a lot of fabrication/work on your own. That can help offset some costs).
Make sure you know what you want to accomplish with the car before you start cutting wires or cutting and welding the body, because any mistake you make will make it more difficult to fix or get rid of if you get tired of it.
thanks. PSI performace in portland is going to help me with the build. luckily i have a friend over there and it allows me an aboundance of knowlege.
i am going to use a 3sgte beams motor. it fits way easier than any of the other motors i was originally thinking and they put out some awesome power. they weigh close to the same and the conversion has been done several times by PSI so they will be able to pull me out of the swamp if i get my self stuck.
Awesome, I'm glad you've got something figured out. I hope it turn out well and you enjoy it! Keep us updated on the progress and any issues you run into.

im thinking im going with the 3sge beams motor, but i have an oppourtunity to buy a vq35de long block for 600. that motor has been put in these a few times. im just not sure on what im going to do. part of me wants to keep it a 4 cyl toyota but then the other part wants to build a beast. ill keep you all updated. pics will be up next week.

dont get me wrong, the 1uz-fe motor is great but they dont offer a whole lot of after market mods for it. a v8 would be cool, but a v6 would be more of a comprimise in terms of power vs practical use. no sense in feeding 2 extra pistons gas when i can get more power with the vq35de.
why would you need more than 250 hp and 260 tq in a corolla? which the aluminum V8 easily produces, youll smoke alot of cars with that and drift effortlessly
