Most of them lie in the metal work of the body

As far as the key things

The Front Suspension and brakes are different.

AE71 has a non-vented 9 inch rotor with fixed caliper while the AE86 has a 10 in vented roller and sliding caliper.

The 4AC engine is the same between AE86 and AE71. It has a non cross flow head. (intake and exhaust on pass. side) The GTS's 4AGE has a cross flow head(intake on pass. side exhaust on drivers side.)

The Fuel tanks are all different between the AE71, AE86 SR5, and AE86 GTS. However they are all interchangeable with small mods. The AE71 has a flexible rubber filler neck while the AE86 has a rigid metal filler neck. The AE86 SR5 has a non baffled tank while the AE86 GTS has a baffled tank.

If the AE86 is a GTS then the the larger 6.7 inch T code rear with an optional LSD and rear disc brakes over the AE71 and SR5 AE86 6.38 S code with drum brakes.

The AE86 is only available with a 4Spd A40D 4 Speed overdrive auto and a T50 5 Speed manual. The AE71 is available with the A40D 4 speed overdrive, A40 3 Speed non overdrive, T40 4 Speed, and T50 5 speed manuals. Although the T50 transmission is the same between all 82-87 Corollas. The bellhousing is different between 3TC,4AC, and 4AGE engines. The 4AC and 4AGE bellhousings will bolt to any 4A engine but the slave cylinder is in a different location.

The AE86 has a different steering column from the AE71.

The AE71 has 2 different radiators depending on Manual or Auto. The AE86 has one style only.

Everything besides body parts and steering column that bolts to an AE86 will bolt to a TE72(after 81) and AE71. All engines, suspension, rear end, crossmembers, sway bars, fuel tanks, driveshafts, transmissions and such are interchangeable.

All aftermarket AE86 suspension parts are direct bolt in to the AE71.

Hope this helps
