1984 Toyota Corolla Diesel

Hello,

I purchased a 1984 Toyota Corolla Diesel 1.8L 1839cc L4 MFI SOHC for $600.

The good: 92,000 original miles. bought from the family of the original owner.
Interior is immaculate.

The bad: Not running. The seller told me he inherited the car from his grandmother. It developed a fuel leak so he took it to a place that was recommended as specializing in diesels. $1600 later he got the car back but after two weeks it stopped running. He couldn't get anywhere with the repair shop so decided to just get rid of it. It cranks but won't start.

I've got to get an air cleaner for it before I can start troubleshooting. I'm hoping to find other 84 corolla diesel owners.

I couldn't find an air filter at O'Reilly or Pep Boys... will have to wait for Monday to try Napa and other parts stores.

Thanks

Installed a battery and air filter. The "Filter" light is on so I followed the owner's manual and drained the fuel filter. I couldn't get the "filter" light to go out even though I drained a considerable amount of fluid... smelled like diesel to me.

Any ideas?

Thanks for responding.

I have not tried replacing the fuel filter. I loosened the drain valve and made sure diesel was was coming out of it.

I've also taken one of the fuel lines off of the injection pump and diesel came out of it.

I left the key in the on position and disconnected/reconnected the fuel cutoff relay which clicked each time I re-connected it.
