Question 4alc swap to 4ac?

I have an 86 corolla with a 4A-LC motor in it. The engine threw a rod. Can I replace it with a 4AC that is set up for rear wheel drive? Are the two interchangable? and do I need to change out the wiring harness? Is there anything I have to change to attach it to my front wheel drive transmission
?

I am supposed to go about 300 miles north friday to pick up a used 4AC so I could really use the help as soon as possible. Thanks!!!!

No they are the same engine and can be swapped so log as you use your non compatible parts. The "L" designation with toyota was only used for a short time in the mid eighties when FWD was brand new. It meant the car was FWD with a transverse engine unlike the FWD tercel with its longitudnal engine. So the engine is the same. Just make sure you keep your intake and exhaust manifolds and things like power steering pump.

I bet the farm

Well, I went and bought the 4AC and just got it mounted on a stand today. I will post again to let you know if your advice paid off. Here's hoping it does.

April 22, 2012, The only difference I found once everything was torn off the block were the six mount lugs for the rear wheel manual transmission. Everything else crossed over great as you said. rebuilt the motor with standard size bearings/pistons/rings and it runs great!!!! Took this long as I also had to swap out my camry engine with one of the japanese engines with about 35,000 miles. two engines, 7 months. Glad to be done!!!!!
