I want to swap the engine (3tc) in my te72 for something with a bit more power, but SIMPLICITY is the number one rule. Can you guys give me some ideas...remember simplicity...little or no frame cutting, it will remain carb'd (stock or aftermarket ok), and shouldnt have need of massive computer harnesses etc. I am considering a 22r (carb'd of course), but I would value your input.
The 3TC is one of the best engines ever built by Toyota. You can do so much with it. You can build it all motor with high comp or mild builds, you can turbocharge, fuel inject it, the sky is the limit with the 3TC. Parts are readily available for it, and it is the easiest most forgiving engine to work on. There are 3TC powered cars that run 10's in the quarter mile all day reliably.
The 22R while a good motor for trucks is not anywhere near as good as the 3TC. Not only that you would need custom mounts, a different transmission, different driveshaft and stuff. All that for a motor that makes a whopping 20 more HP but weighs more, and can't make as much power.
When you want to talk about high dollar expensive swaps to get more than you could out of the 3TC, the only way to go is the 3SGTE (need lots of custom work) or the JZ series inline 6 (serious work involved to the entire car) but these are engines that you need to push to 600HP or more.
I have had some pretty nasty 3TC's. I used to be able to walk all over B16 Civics and GSR integras with a mild cam, Weber 32/36, and 11.5 pistons. Add some Dual 45 DCOE webers, a serious cam, 89MM more and the same pistons with some head work and you can have a 200HP 3TC.
Just Google 3TC turbo and see some of the nasty 3TC's out there. The 22R is stout but it just can't compete.
Short of those engines nothing is worth swapping in a Corolla for the money. Not even the SR20 or KA motors from Nissan.
Thanks for the insight..I love my 3t and always have. Replacement parts 'round here are scarce. That was a reason for considering a swap, as well as making more power. I'm not really interested in the likes of a jz series or v8 swap...theyre over comlicated and overpriced. hahaha, if I cant afford twin webers there is no way I could afford those swaps, nor am I that good at f.i. and cumputer management. I am a master on ol' skool carby engines though. Paradoxically, I have considered a 3t swap into my 22r powered '85 truck. Hahaha I have never heard a 2xr that didn't rattle like a deisel and it drives me nuts!
If I sould find a SU sidedraft or four barrel setup I would definitely keep it (mikuni/weber/dellortos are damned expensive). Ok, so anyway I'm open to ideas now....lets keep it simple though (because of expense high end stuff like turbos/injection are out) I'm not looking to build a nine second car, just punch it up to say 150-200 horse range....you know, just enough to be entertaining and see off the Honda guys on a saturday night.
You gotta pay to play man. The 2T and 3T are OHV 8 Valve motors. Meaning they don't have a lot of moving parts (reliable) but they also aren't hiding any hidden power in stock form.
To get from 75HP (I remember it being about 80WHP with timing adjustment) to 150-200 you are going to need some cash. Not serious swap cash but money.
You are going to want to hit up paradiseracing.com, psiracing, and theracingstore.com these are the major hitters when it comes to dealing with old skool Toyotas.
At the very least you are going to need to pull the motor and do a decent rebuild. You are going to need to bore the motor out to at least 87MM (around 1.9 liter), get a decent cam .310 Schneider or Crane, a better clutch (or even look into a W50 transmission swap as the T50 won't take too much power but can take a decent amount), upgrade the rear end (AE86 GTS, 71-83 Celica, Ford 8.8, MK1 Supra, Low body 86-95 Toyota Truck, Chevy 10/12 Bolt are all good options), upgrade the fuel system (holley blue or red fuel pump, Either a severely jetted Weber 32/36, a Holley 4 Barrel, or a set of 40/45 DCOE webers are a must(if you saved enough money you could go ITB and build a fuel injection set up which is really not that hard), header, griffin radiator, port work on the head, dual valve springs, suspension to handle all the extra power and then you will be where you want.
Like I said it isn't cheap. I found this out a long long time ago. If you want to spank on 99 and below Civic EX's and below then you will just need a header, weber 32/36, better clutch, an MSD ignition, and you will be good to go.
150-200 is a lot out of an ancient motor. At the very least you would need to swap in a 20 Valve 4AGE(big money as you almost need a donor GTS for the swap).
Just save your money for a while and do what you want with it. I saved up and went 1JZ in my 82. Super expensive, super hard, but super worth it. It isn't done yet but so very soon it will be.
Alot of that seems to be right on target, but I am concerned that 310 (I am assuming you mean duration and not lift) would be a bit aggressive for a daily driver in terms of seamless driveability and gas mileage. I think I would rather make up the difference with spray (n2o). While I am still interested in an engine swap, I'm not interested in the complexity and expense of a 2jz. Hahaha it's not THAT serious. I stepped off the techno train in 1987 and I like it here at the station. I'm interested in CARB'D fours and CARB'D rotarys (rotaries?)....basically simple and unique, with a bit more power. I have even considered L20 Nissan, carby 2.3 Ford and a weber powered 12a. Keep in mind this a daily driver and will need to be built in stages as money allows. I even considered the old school 2.8 chevy vee six, but scrapped the idea thinking the extra weight could throw off the cars natural balance.
None of the swaps you mentioned are going to be that easy and all require custom mounts, a transmission, driveshaft, and except for maybe the 12A(which isn't the most reliable engine) not one of them can easily make power especially more than the 3T can already.
As for the 3T yes I mean duration at .050. While yes it will not be the best it can still be daily driven.
If you want something significantly better than stock then all you need is a weber 32/36, header, a .280 Cam, some timing work, maybe cut the head down a little bit and you will notice a huge difference. This will be enough to spank of plenty of cars until you decide to go turbo .
Not just that but the 3T is one of the most bullet proof overbuilt engines ever built. It can run with rods out of the block and no oil (ask me how I know). So it will be reliable as you build it.
