I have a 95 Corolla DX that makes a "CLUNK" noise while driving when I quickly take my foot off the accelerator. The CLUNK noise is coming from the front somewhere. It will make this noise at any speed but you mostly hear it when driving at lower speeds down a residential street or parking lot. Again, you don't hear the clunk noise until you quickly take your foot off the gas. I had the transmission rebuilt a couple years ago and thought for sure they would find the problem and fix it but they didn't. (It's possible they didn't find the source of the clunk noise because the idiot that owns the shop didn't tell the mechanic to look for it like I asked him to!) There's no slop in the transaxles and all but one of the engine and transmission mounts have been replaced. This noise started about 7 years ago after I accidentally drove over a bowling ball size chunk of ice and snow. It was the passenger side that hit the big chunk.
The bottom line is that in the 7 years since this noise started it doesn't seem to have adversely effected anything with the car in that there's never been any uneven wear with the front tires or alignment issues. It's just an annoying noise that could freak out potential buyers in the future when I eventually sell this car.
Yes, it could be the one last motor/tranny mount that they didn't bother to replace. :frown: Do you know how many motor mounts a 95 Corolla has and also how many transmission mounts?
I checked and the right and rear motor mounts have been replaced and the one transmission mount. So the only one left to replace is the LEFT motor mount.
On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the most difficult, what number would you give for a handy with tools NON-mechanic to replace the left motor mount on a 95 Corolla with an automatic transmission?
The left mount IS the transmission mount. There are four. Left is transmission, right is connected to the upper part of the engine, and there's the front and the rear. Front, left, and right are all easy. Rear is really difficult.
94RollaDad - The three mounts were replaced AFTER the clunk noise started. The front right engine mount and the transmission mount were aftermarket, and except for the clunk, it was amazing how much quieter everything was after those two were replaced. The rear engine mount was replaced later by someone else and I don't know if it was aftermarket or OEM. (The invoice says "ANA 8129" or possibly "ANA 8179" on it.)
The last mount to replace would be the front mount. I tried to add images but its not letting me.
When you say check the "exhaust mount that sits on the crossmember" - Does that mount have some kind of material that cushions it at that connection?
It's worth a shot replacing the front mount, it's cheap and easy to replace. Not sure if it'll fix your issue.
Yeah the exhaust mount is filled with rubber a lot like the engine mounts. It sits on the crossmember and extends out, bolting to the exhaust with two fasteners. Also easy to replace I believe.
My guess is that it's the exhaust hitting. If it got bent upward by the ice, then it's closer to the floor. When the engine is pulling the car forward, it tilts back toward the firewall (IIRC) lowering the exhaust. So when you let off the accelerator, the top of the engine swings forward, lifting the exhaust back to its normal location - where it might smack the floor pan.
I have to replace the starter this week so I will check that out. If it is the exhaust bracket, then this will be the solution to the clunk that no one in the last 7 years has been able to figure out...and those were all people who were looking at it!
