Gear oil question

I didn't get a book with my 97 rolla sd and Im curious as to what weight gear oil the gearbox calls for and if there are any synthetics that can be used.

I know in my celica it was recommended to use semi synthetic gm friction modified synchromesh.

Thanx all

may want to stay away from GL-5 fluid and any fluid with limited slip additive the GL-5 can be corrosive to soft metal parts in GL-4 aplications and the limited slip can also cause issues due to the fricition modifiers,

I have tried alot of different fluids and my favorite is redline MT-90

http://www.redlineoil.com/products_g...7&categoryID=7

Next time im gonna try MTL because its a little thinner and supposedly may help smooth out the shifting even more.

Redline MT-90 (type GL4 with a higher viscosity than GL5) is what I use. I highly recommend it since both upshifts and downshifts become super smooth. On freezing cold days, I do not have to wait for the car to warm up so that I can get the car into gear. It shifts like butter even when the car is cold.

Yeah, sounds like GL-4 is the way to go then.

Redline MTL is GL-5. Both sites state that the friction modifiers have been removed and it makes it great for cold days and racing. But It makes me think "too thin"..

Think I'll stick with a GL-4 fuid, amsoil or redline, whichever is readily available here.

thanx fellas

Modern GL5 gear oils are not corrosive to soft metals any more. They were. A car spec'd for GL4 or GL5 will work with either fluid. HOWEVER, using a GL5 can usually cause more difficult shifting unless you're in an area that is always warm. It did in my 03 Matrix 6 speed. You can't go wrong with the good GL4's mentioned. I finally settled on Redline MT90 in both my Matrix and my 04 5 speed Tacoma after having tried the Amsoil MTG GL4 75W90 and their SVG GL5 in the Matrix. Good all around shifting with the MT90. The Tacoma is a little notchy when cold but that goes away once the fluid warms.

There are PLENTY of GL-5 gear oils that have sulphuric-based additives that are indeed corrosive to brass & copper.
I know the VW 020 trans has brass synchros,
and VW trans gurus find that using a GL-5 in the 020 trans will shorten synchro life by aprox 50%.
However, I don't know about the trans in my g/f's '92 Corolla.

You are correct, sir. Better to play it safe.
GL-5 is not always a good substitute for GL-4...

BTW, MTL made a huge difference in my '86 VW GTI.
Smooth shifting in all temps.... like butta!

I can never seem to get the rite amount of gear oil in the box. Either put too much or too little.
Does anyone know the required amount of oil to put in a C52 20v 5fwd gearbox? Is there a level mark somewhere on the VSS or sumthing?

I don't know, but:
-call a Toyota dealer & ask for the official specs.
-Google is your friend
-on every car I ever R & R'ed the gear oil, there's never been a level mark or anything.
The usual routine is fill it up until it flows out of the "fill hole".
However, if you are filling it up through the speedo hole, it will be helpful know the exact specs.
Overfilling by a bit shouldn't create any problems, though...
and is certainly better than underfilling.

you just fill it at the fill plug until it reaches the hole, then put the plug back in.. that is just about in every manual trans, transaxle, differential...
