96'corolla : Battery & Air-Bag lights stay on

In my 1996 corolla, yesterday while driving battery light turned-on, after for a while I parked the car in a parking lot and turned it off. I checked engine compartment for wiring and drive belt. It seems OK.

When I started the car again, it started and stopped after 2 to 3 minutes, staying on gas pedal did not help, but battery light and air-bag light stayed on.

I tried to run car little ahead and keep it running to charge battery, it ran a little bit stopped with few light jerks. Jump start worked initially for two to three times, but car did not go long and stopped. With booster back additional battery, I manage to drive it to my parking lot.

Is it battery not holding enough charge or it’s faulty alternator?
Is there any way out I can check battery is holding enough charge by myself?
Is there any procedure to check alternator performance?
