Brake caliper question

On tuesday, my '95 Corolla's LH wheel started making a scraping noise when I would turn hard. When I checked it out, the top edge of the disc was getting a grooves scraped in somehow. I took the brake apart, but could not find anything wrong.

I did notice however, that the caliper could be wiggled around somewhat while bolted on. I'm not entirely sure it's suppossed to do that.

Other than that, I'm still scratching my head over this. Any Ideas?

Everything is tight, (Studs and caliper wiggle as a unit) but it looks to me it wiggles where the studs go into the "Brake Pad holder" (For lack of a better word)...Brake worked fine until now...

Guess I should grab a replacment holder...

As far as I can tell, everything on this car is origional, so with 325,000 Kilometers on it, it's a little worn out

Guessed right! It's about 201,000 miles.

I asked the dealer about a bracket (THAT's the word! ) - 'bout 125 bucks. however, I'm pretty sure that I swapped the two around when I had the brakes apart. No damage that I can tell... Could the wheel bearing do that? don't think so...

One thing I think I'll try is replace the entire bracket and caliper with one from that '92 I have (See my other topic). Bolts look like they'll match...

It's probably not the pad bracket unless that part is obviously damaged.

Put the front end of the car up on jackstands and put it in drive and let the wheels idle around for a bit with the wheels off. My bet is you'll hear a constant whooshing sound meaning the caliper is sticking, which means the caliper needs to replaced.

I think I just found out.

When I had the tires replaced, the mechanic told me there was a lot of play on the side with the brake problem, and he would suspect the bottom ball joints. Seeing it myself was enough for me to grab a pair of ball joints to replace them. I jacked that side up, prepared for the task, an noticed the HUB was wiggling, not the braket.

After taking it apart and cleaning it, I think I can piece it together.

Before I bought it, The previous owners had the clutch replaced. Apon completing the job, The mechanic must have neglected to tourqe the shaft nut on there (On BOTH of them; I replaced the other driveshaft a few weeks earlier, and noticed the nut was too easy to get off) , so the hub was sitting loose.

As it drove on, the inner inside bearing race came loose, and the hub wore on that race. When the shaft under the race was a smaller diameter, the hub started to angle up, and that included the brake disc...

So, It WAS the wheel bearing! I need at least a hub. Are there aftermarket ones available, or am I stuck at Toyota's high OEM prices?
