1996 Corolla back lights problem

I have a 1996 Corolla Dx which I just bought and there is one problem, the back lights on the car dont work, position lights, brake lights. Also if I turn the light switch to off and press on the brake my interior lights flash every time I step on the brake pedal. Did anyone have this problem, and what should I check first. Thanks

Sounds like a bad ground. Check all the ground connections for corrosion and clean and tighten as necessary.

Yup, I agree about the ground. First though, make sure all your bulbs are good and that you have no blown fuses. If you have a blown fuse, even if it's not directly related to lights, it may affect other circuits. If there are any plugs in the circuit, unplug them and plug them in to make sure there is proper contact. Use a small alligator clip cable to directly ground a light socket and see if it works. If the ground wires are linked together on the tail lights by short pieces of wire connected with philips screws (as in the '91's), loosen the screws slightly and tighten to make sure there is continuity. If you don't have a Haynes manual you can likely find a wiring diagram at www.autozone.com under vehicle repair guides.

Exclamation

that's my big gripe about these cars,, all plastic cars,, when they reach a certain age, the plastic completely goes to shit,, and it's almost impossible for the average person to fix.. the plastic breaks, the cheap metal connectors rot, rust. and break... and you end up with an old pile of shit...

other than that they run a very long time..
