94 corolla camshaft frozen, crankshaft & timing belt cranks over

Hi All,

I have a 94 corolla 1.8 , I first started out thinking I had an ignition problem. As I dug deeper I popped off the valve cover and noticed when the engine is cranking over the camshaft does not move but the Crankshaft & timing belt does... Any ideas ? Thank you!

If the cam is frozen nothing would move unless the belt is stripped or has no tension

one other oddball possibility is that the cam gear has broken free from the camshaft.

X2 - If the belt is actually turning, then this pretty much has to be the problem.

yeah the cam actually snapped on the left side of the seal, everyone @ toyota said they've never seen it before... any one have any ideas what could've caused this? Only thing I could think of was the timing belt was too tight.

Lightbulb

We have no clue what the history is of the car. When it was run, and how it was running.. how many miles..
but, I can say that it could have had a lubrication problem, a bad bearing, a bent valve stem, the wrong cam part installed, all which can contribute to a broken camshaft.

I once broke a camshaft on a chevy V8 engine, it was the wrong size (thanx to my dad who insisted I try one from a spare engine we had..)

lack of lubrication caused the bearing the seize the cam, pop off the bearing caps for the camshafts and i'll bet they're all marred up and scuffed. lower end bearings may not look very good either.

At that point, id find a used motor and grab a case of beer, some friends, and engine lift and swap it out on a weekend.
