gen 7 Need help locating the crankshaft position sensor 1994 prizm

Hi,

I need some help locating my Prizm's cranshaft position sensor.

I have this engine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:19..._prizm_lsi.jpg

Which per Wikipedia is the 2nd generation 4A-FE engine (fuel injected, looks identical to the one in the photo).

I'm planning on replacing it, as it's throwing a code that indicates the computer senses no RPMs, it idles rough, stutters going up hills, and lost 5mpg on the highway.

I believe I can use this sensor to replace it http://www.thepartsbin.com/catalog/?...3671+1725+7532
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks in advance,

Dave

I didn't get the code, all I saw was the readout "No RPM data to engine". Two professional mechanics have said it's the crank sensor.

I know it should be near the crank pulley. But where exactly? (e.g. I found the oil sensor - It's behind the alternator!)

Here's another question - Does this motor even HAVE a crank position sensor, or does it determine engine position inside the distributor?!

it doesnt have one, only OBD2 (95.5-96+) 4afe/7afe have a crank position sensor for determining cylinder misfire as part of OBD2 emissions self diagnostics. you rely on a cam position sensor inside the distributor.

you can see the nub on the shaft is for cylinder one which tells the computer where the engine is at in its rotation and which pair of fuel injectors to fire and how often to fire the ignition coil. i'm pretty sure the cam position sensor is the part with the green and white/black wires.

Exclamation HAH! That figures.

...We don't need no steenking crankshaft position sensors!

Thanks man, that cleared up a lot. Incidentally, www.rockauto.com just confirmed what you said. So I Guess I need a distributor.

Looks like they're kind of expensive ($150), fortunately I have a discount code for them until Sept 20th (5% off), and anyone can use it, so if you need a part the # is

20097761682692

And no, I don't work for them, but I do like them. They're usually less expensive (for retail customers anyway) and they have a lot of parts.

...Unless someone knows where I can buy it cheaper!!! XD

EDIT - EDIT - I (thought I had found way cheaper remanufactured distributors online than RockAuto...)

E.g. thought this one might work http://www.car-stuff.com/store/?N=99...921+4294967153 , but then I noticed the more expensive ones indicated "FI" and VIN "6", and I remembered that my Prizm is fuel injected, and the VIN ends with a "6" (1.6L)... So I need the expensive one, and RockAuto has a new distributor for less than the reman.

Anyone have a favorite parts retailer?

rock auto is good, this whole forum has a 5% discount code actually.

these don't fail too often, you could probably get a working one from the junkyard for way less. remember to mark the head as to the distributors location and put it back exactly, if not you'll need to set the base ignition timing of the engine.
