ODB2 scanner

I have a 1996 Corolla, supposely using the ODB2. I want to purchase a ODB2 reader, I saw on the internet some stand-alone scanners and also those interface that you can connect to a computer.

which of the 2 types are better? I am more inclined toward the PC-based, I think there might be more fonctionalities etc.

I think in addition to diagnosing the trouble code, the ability to display in real time the following parameters is cool:

- Engine RPM
- Engine timing info
- Fuel mixture, 0xygen reading
- Fuel pressure
- Coolant temperature
- and many more

most PC-based interface does not come with the software. Any one know a good free software can it be used? Any particular interface recommended?

This won't really help you much, but I bought an inexpensive Actron reader. Don't remember the model, but I spent about 60 bucks.

It gives me the code, and then I Google the code and the yr/model car and get the information I need from people who've run into it already on the same car. I like it because it's simple and I don't have more freakin software to manage on my PC.

Darn, this thing is popular, everyone wants to borrow it!

After some readings, I finally decided to order the PC-based USB version for about $65 CAD

I am looking forward using it in a few days, I will post here my findings

I am learning right now and testing several software, they all have their strengths and limitations

so far I have tried the following softwares, most of them are free or have a free 'light' version which has several limitations

- EasyODBII
- Scantool.net
- ScanMaster
- ODB2Spy
