ABS light on

Hi to all you Gurus.

I'm new to the board. It's overwhelming. You guys rock! Its a very useful board and I've already hacked at my Corolla with some of the suggestions found here.

I looked all over for something on this, and found the parts listing but not what I need to know.
http://www.bba-reman.com/content.aspx?cont...a_early_abs_ecu

The Beast: 1993 Corolla Wagon. Automatic, mileage: 275,000.

The ABS light stays on. Toyota told me it would cost about $1800 to repair. Since the car is driven only by me - and not used a lot, I would like to skip the repair or do it myself if I can find the right part. The car runs beautifully and the brakes work fine without the ABS. However, I can't pass inspection with the ABS light on.

I took the car to a local garage for a second opinion. All the wheel sensors are fine, they also determined its the ABS ECU. They could not test this however without a known good ABS ECU.

My question: Where is the ABS ECU (I think I might know where it is) and how do I go about removing and replacing it?

First you may know that you don't need ABS..that said it should be under the pass. side floor mat under the rug...you also have relays on the pass. fender by the ABS unit...

note: I have a GEO Prizm and that is where it is...

I didn't even know they made that abs setup. I wonder if it can be added to a non abs setup. Probably not.

what code is stored for the ABS light? you can pull the codes yourself by jumping 2 pins in the underhood diagnostic connector. i'm not sure which 2 pins for ABS codes though.

a used ABS computer is an option, and where i'd go. they don't fail often so a used one from a yard should be OK, if its not take it back. but thats why i want to know what code is stored. i'll assume that both places have checked that the abs comptuer (its called an EBCM electronic brake control module) is getting the correct power and ground signals and that the wheel speed signals (ac sine waves) are getting to it?

I had an abs light, go into the main fuse box under the hood and check the main abs fuse (red block with clear top) and verify that its good. Mine was popped, I replaced it and no issues since, no shorts or anything funny, and the abs works top notch. Without that the abs computer has no power and nothing will respond.

Edit/note: That isn't a standard fuse. You need to remove the fuse box, pop off the lower cover and unbolt that fuse if it needs to be replaced.
