The wires should be taped in a little bundle on either side of the rear seat. I think you have to remove the side cushions to get to them. it's one bolt under the bottom of the seat. Just pull up and the cushion will expose the bolt. then take the bolt out and pull up on the side cushion it'll just fall out, it's on a hook. you might have to remove the door frame panel next to the window too. I don't remember. The wires don't have plugs so you'll have to splice them onto either the speaker or go jack some plugs out of a wreck. Good luck
Hmm I lifted up the back seat (it was simply hold down by 2 clips) the only thing I saw was the access pannel and wires for the fuel pump, no other wire harness
I also looked at the back portion of the seat, no wire harness either
so maybe it is easier to run my own wires from the stereo to the rear, I will find a way to hide it, maybe run along the side trims
weird my DX they were under the side/back part of the seat in little bundles. If you were sitting in the seat on the drivers side they would be just over your left shoulder.
Maybe my car is different, I have the integrated child seat on the passenger side of the rear seat. That portion of the seat can not be folded down. On the driver's side, the back can be folded down. So like you say, if I am sitting in the back, driver's side, if I remove my left shoulder cushion, I only see the access for the strut tower, no wire harness nothing, on the other side cushion towards the passenger, no harness either under the cushion
I can't understand why Toyota was so cheap by not putting speakers at the rear back then. They could have put at least put ordinary speakers, not that expensive. Was it standard practice in the car industry in the 1990s to sell car with only front speakers?
and yes, my trim is Corolla 1996 DX Plus
what is the 'Plus' for !! not even rear speakers LOL
I'm pretty sure back in the day rear speakers were like a bonus option. At least it was on my 96 DX, I think the LE came with them stock but it also had a sunroof and power everything. What was the plus thing again??? OD on you auto transmission?? That sucks you have no wires mine were just laying there so I grabbed some speakers from an LE and the rear shelf cover with speaker guards and put them in.
If you pull the rear deck out (cardboard wrapped with cloth) there should be 2 pigtails under it, for left and right. You need to pull the plastic off from behind the rear seats (when they fold down, there is a harness passage behind it.

Boost, may you RIP.
Yeah ok, it was a bit more complicated than I remembered but i just ripped apart my friend's to put them in his. Take off the bottom of the rear seat, sides of the rear seat, back light, driver's side plastic door frame/ rear seatbelt cover, and the rear deck. Underneath right behind the two seats you'll see the wires and the plugs are bundled underneath two little patches of plastic and butyl stuck to the channel in the frame. Just kinda peel them half back and you can pull the plugs out. You might need to clean them up cause butyl can be messy crap and it gets kinda stuck on the plugs. If you jack some speakers with mounts out of another corolla (I got them out of an LE) and the little plastic plugs that they screw into. The metal already has six (3 each) square holes they just pop right into. After that it's pretty much plug and play, just put everything back together. Just remember to get a rear deck out of an LE that has the guards or cut some holes for the new speakers in your existing rear deck.
.... Underneath right behind the two seats you'll see the wires and the plugs are bundled underneath two little patches of plastic and butyl stuck to the channel in the frame.
Corpsey, could you please clarify what you mean by ''Underneath right behind the two seats'' ?
I mean right behind the two parts that fold down, on top of where the rear deck used to be. There is a channel where the wire for your rear deck light goes. They are right there, you can't miss the two pieces of butyl tape they are pretty big. Driver's side speaker wire is behind driver's side, Passenger side is on passenger side. It's pretty obvious, if you don't see them, you don't have the wires
hmm it means I don't likely have the wires because I only see the channel for the rear elevated brake light, nothing else
eh well! I will cut the wire harness at the radio and wire my own wires to the rear
it is strange though, on the OEM wire harness near the radio, the wires for the rear speakers are present according to the pin-out diagram I found on the internet. Those wires must go somewhere, maybe hidden underneath the carpet but it is too much work involved removing the carpet.
check behind the door panel on the driver's side rear seat. The panel just below the one where the Seatbelt/backwindow panel is. All the wiring for the rear of the car goes into this channel. I don't think any wiring is under the carpets. If you don't see a significantly thicker yellow wire and a significantly thicker red wire. You don't have the wiring. If you can has cruise, I guarantee you've got wires for rear speakers. If your car is the Base model, probably not
